Solution

Locking the Exposure Setting (AE Lock)

You can set the exposure and focus separately. This is effective when the contrast is too strong between the subject and background or when a subject is backlit.

This function is only available in the , P, Tv, and Av modes.
  1. Turn on the camera, and set the mode switch to .

  2. Press the <DISPLAY> button to turn the LCD monitor on.

  3. Set the flash to [] by pressing the () button repeatedly, until is displayed on the LCD.
    - The AE lock cannot be set if the flash fires.

  4. Focus the AF frame or the spot metering frame on the subject on which you wish to lock the exposure setting.

  5. While pressing the shutter button halfway, press the button.
    -
    The icon will display.



  6. Re-aim the camera to compose the shot as desired and press the shutter button fully.



    The AF frame focuses on the subject.

To Release the AE Lock

Operate a button other than the or button.

  • The AE lock function cannot be used when the LCD monitor is off.
  • The automatically selected combinations of shutter speeds and aperture values can be freely changed without altering the exposure with the following procedures:
  1. Turn the mode dial to P, Tv, or Av.

  2. Press the <DISPLAY> button to turn the LCD monitor on.

  3. Focus on the subject on which you wish to lock the exposure.

  4. Press and hold the shutter button halfway and press the button.
    - The exposure setting will lock and the icon will appear on the LCD monitor.

  5. Press the or button until the desired shutter speed or aperture value is reached.

  6. Recompose the image and shoot. (The setting will cancel after the shot is taken.)
