Av: Setting the Aperture
The aperture adjusts the amount of light that passes through the lens. Selecting a lower aperture value (opening the aperture) allows you to fade the background. A higher aperture value (closing it) brings the entire range from foreground to background into focus.
1. Turn the shooting mode dial to Av.
2. Select a value using the <Control Ring> around the lens and shoot the image.
The correct exposure has been set if the shutter speed and aperture value show in white.

The larger the aperture value, the smaller the lens aperture.

- If the shutter speed shows in orange on the LCD monitor, the image is under exposed (insufficient light) or overexposed (too much light). Adjust the aperture value using the left and right arrow on the omni selector until the shutter speed display turns white.
- Some aperture values may not be available with certain zoom positions.
- The fastest shutter speed when using the flash is 1/500th second. As a result, the camera will not set a shutter speed faster than 1/500th second regardless of the aperture value you set.
- Depending on the zoom position, some aperture values may not be available.

- Please note that camera shake becomes a factor at low shutter speeds. If the camera shake warning
 appears in the LCD monitor, secure the camera to a tripod before shooting.
- In this mode, the maximum shutter speed with synchronized flash is 1/500 second. The aperture value setting may therefore be changed automatically to match the synchronized flash speed even if its value was set previously.

Safety Shift
With Tv and Av modes, if [Safety Shift] is set to [On] in the <MENU>, the shutter speed or aperture value is automatically adjusted for the correct exposure when it cannot otherwise be obtained. Safety Shift is disabled when the flash is enabled.
