How do I install the USB Driver for Windows?

Canon digital cameras shipped with any of several versions of the Canon Digital Camera Solutions Disk, the intent being to provide the most current software available at the time the camera was packaged. In order to provide the most accurate answer to your question, read the label of your Canon Digital Camera Solutions Disk, and click on the matching version.

Version 1.0

Version 2.0 or Version 3.0

Version 4.0, Version 5.0, or Version 6.0

Version 7.0 or Version 7.1

Version 1.0

Windows 98 Installation

Note: Your computer may prompt you to insert the CD-ROM containing your Windows system software during the installation. Have the Windows disk handy in case it is required.

  1. Once you have attached the USB cable to the camera and computer, slide the mode switch to the Replay position and press the main switch to turn on the power.
  2. Turn on the computer. The "Add New Hardware Wizard" screen will appear after a moment.
  3. Read the dialog and click Next.
  4. Select Search for the best driver for your device (recommended) and click Next. The next screen asks you where to look for the driver.
  5. Insert the Canon Digital Camera Solution Disk in the CD-ROM drive.
  6. Click the CD-ROM drive check box; be sure to uncheck the other options and click Next.
  7. Once the driver is found, the camera model will appear on the screen. Click Next.
  8. Once files are copied click Finish.
  9. If you are prompted to restart your computer, remove the CD-ROM from the CD-ROM driver and restart the computer as instructed.

Windows 2000 Installation

Note: Log on as the administrator and then begin the installation process.

  1. Once you have attached the USB cable to the camera and computer, slide the mode switch to the Replay position and press the main switch to turn on the power.
  2. Turn on the computer. The "Found New Hardware Wizard" screen will appear after a moment.
  3. Read the dialog and click Next.
  4. Select Search for a suitable driver for my device (recommended) and click Next. The next screen asks you where to look for the driver.
  5. Insert the Canon Digital Camera Solution Disk in the CD-ROM drive.
  6. Click the CD-ROM drives check box; be sure to uncheck the other options and click Next.
  7. Once the driver is found, the camera model will appear on the screen. Click Next.
  8. Click Yes if the Digital Signature Not Found message is displayed.
  9. Click No to All if the Confirm File Replace message is displayed
  10. Once files are copied click Finish.
  11. If you are prompted to restart your computer, remove the CD-ROM from the CD-ROM driver and restart the computer as instructed.

Version 2.0 or Version 3.0

  7. Click Browse and select USB_drv\English folder from the Canon Digital Camera solution Disk then click OK.
  8. Click Next.
  9. Once the driver is found, the camera model will appear on the screen. Click Next.

  11. If you are prompted to restart your computer, remove the CD-ROM from the CD-ROM driver and restart the computer as instructed.

Windows 2000 Installation

Notes: Ensure that you install the contents of the Canon Digital Camera Solution Disk before you attach the camera to the computer's USB port. This will allow the automatic selection of the correct USB driver.

--The USB driver only needs to be installed the first time the camera is connected via the USB interface. Installation is not required from the second time onward.

--Do not cancel the installation partway through. Allow the procedure to finish completely before exiting. The camera may not operate correctly if the installation is incomplete.

--Windows 2000 users should log on as the Administrator before commencing installation.

  1. Once you have attached the USB cable to the camera and computer, set the camera to the mode for communicating with a computer.
  2. The "Add New Hardware Wizard" dialog will appear after a moment and automatically install the USB driver.
  3. With Windows Me or Windows 2000, if the "Digital Signature Not Found" message displays partway through installation, follow the procedures below.
  • Click the Yes button if the "Digital Signature Not Found" message displays.
  • Click No to All if the "Confirm File Replace" dialog displays.
  1. If a dialog prompts you to restart your computer, remove the CD-ROM from the drive and restart the computer as instructed.

Version 7.0 or Version 7.1

Notes: Ensure that you install the contents of the Canon Digital Camera Solution Disk before you attach the camera to the computer's USB port. This will allow the automatic selection of the correct USB driver.

  2. The "Add New Hardware Wizard" will open and automatically install the USB TWAIN Driver or the USB WIA Driver.
  3. If you are prompted to restart the computer, restart the computer according to the onscreen messages.

If installing to Windows 98

  1. Once you have attached the USB cable to the camera and computer, set the camera to the mode for communicating with a computer.
  2. After a moment, Windows will prompt you to insert the Solutions Disk CDROM. Click OK, but do not insert the CDROM.
  3. On the following screen, click the Browse button and select the following folders: Program Files, Canon, DC_USB_TWAIN, and CAMERA3 (for G2, S30 or S40) or CAMERA2 (for S300, A10, A20, or S110). (When you installed the software, the driver files were copied to this location.)
  4. Click OK. The USB TWAIN Driver will automatically install.
