How to reinstall the driver for the EOS Digital Rebel in Windows XP.

Solution

The following describes how to reinstall the WIA driver on Windows XP.
(The WIA driver is a USB compliant driver that supports Windows Me/XP.)

This operation can be conducted by following three steps.

Step I: Uninstall the WIA driver.
Step II: Install the driver software from EOS DIGITAL SOLUTION DISK.
Step III: Connect the camera to the computer to complete the WIA driver installation.

Attention 1: Set the camera's Auto power off function to [OFF] in advance.
Attention 2: Check [Communication] in menu is set to [Normal].
Attention 3: You must first log in as an Administrator before reinstalling the driver.

Step I: Uninstall the WIA driver

  1. Close any programs that are running.
  2. From the [Start] button, select [Programs], [Canon Utilities], [Camera Model Name] and [WIA Driver Uninstall].
  3. Click [OK] when the Confirm Uninstall window appears.
  4. Click [Finish] when the Maintenance Complete window appears.
  5. Set the camera's power switch to [OFF].
  6. Plug the bundled interface cable into the USB port of the computer.

The location of the USB port differs depending on your computer. For further instructions, please refer to the Users' Manual for your computer.

  7. Plug the other end of interface cable into the camera's DIGITAL terminal.

Precautions when connecting the interface cable

    1. Use only the interface cable supplied with your camera when connecting the camera to the computer.
    2. Connect the camera directly to the computer's USB port via a interface cable. If you connect through a USB hub, the camera may not operate correctly.
    3. Never use other USB compliant devices at the same time (excludes a USB mouse or keyboard). The connection may not operate correctly. In this case, disconnect the camera and the other USB devices from the computer and reconnect just the camera.
    4. Never connect more than one camera to the same computer. The camera may not operate correctly.
    5. Never allow the computer to go into standby (sleep) mode while a camera is connected via the USB interface. If this does happen, try to awaken the computer with the camera connected.
  8. Set the camera's power switch to [ON].

When the [Camera Model Name] dialog box or the [Scanners and Cameras Wizard] dialog box appears, click [Cancel].

  9. Click the [Start] button and select [Control Panel] and [Printers and other hardware].

  10. Double-click the [Scanners and Cameras], and the [Scanners and Cameras] dialog box appears.

  11. Select and right-click the [Camera Model Name] icon in the [Scanners and Cameras] dialog box and then select [Delete] from the menu that appears.
When the confirmation message appears, click the [Yes] button.

If [Camera Model Name] does not appear in the [Scanners and Cameras] dialog box, close the dialog box and proceed to step 12.

  12. Open the [Device Manager] by the following procedures.

    1. Click the [Start] button, and select [Control Panel] and [Performance and maintenance].
    2. Double-click the [System] icon to open the [System Properties] dialog box.
    3. Click the [Hardware] tab.
    4. Click the [Device Manager] button.
  13. Delete the [Camera Model Name] or [Canon Digital Camera] displayed on the [Device Manager] by following the instructions below.

    1. Click the [+] to the left of [Imaging Devices], [Other devices] or [Unknown device]. (If you do not find them all, click the ones you find.)
    2. Select and right-click [Camera Model Name] or [Canon Digital Camera] and select [Uninstall] from the menu that appears.
    3. When a confirmation message appears, click [OK].
    4. Repeat the above (13-2) procedure until [Camera Model Name] or [Canon Digital Camera] is not displayed in each device.
Nothing to delete may be displayed at all. In this case, proceed to the next step.
    5. Close [Device Manager], and click the [OK] button to close the [System Properties] dialog box.

  14. Follow the procedures below to show all files and folders.

    1. Click the [Start] button and select [Control Panel], [Appearance and Themes] and [Folder Options].

    2. Select the [View] tab in the [Folder Options] dialog box.

    3. Select the [Show hidden files and folders] radio button in [Hidden files and folders] and then deselect the [Hide extensions for known file types] checkbox.
If these settings are already selected, simply proceed to the next step.

    4. Click [OK] to close the [Folder Options] dialog box.

  15. Delete the following files in the [Inf] folder by the procedures below.

Be extremely careful not to delete the wrong files. If you delete the wrong file, you may be unable to restart Windows.

    1. Click the [Start] button and select [My Computer].
    2. Double-click the [C:] drive, the [Windows] folder and the [Inf] folder.
    3. Search for files called [Oem*.inf] or [Oem*.pnf] in the [Inf] folder.

Substitute a number such as 1 or 2 for the asterisk(*). Also, because [Oem*.inf] and [Oem*.pnf] files come in pairs, substitute the same number for the asterisk in each pair (e.g. Oem2.inf and Oem2.pnf).

The [Inf] folder may contain multiple pairs of [Oem*] files.
    4. Check the contents of the [Oem*.inf] files.

Double-click an [Oem*.inf] file to display the file contents. Check out [;**** Canon Camera Driver Setup File ****] appears on the first line.
If there are multiple [Oem*.inf] files, repeat this procedure.
    5. Delete All [Oem*] file sets: the [Oem*.inf] files that contain [;**** Canon Camera Driver Setup File ****] and the [Oem*.pnf] files.
  16. Turn the camera's power switch to [OFF].

  17. Make sure to remove the interface cable from your computer.

  18. Restart your computer.

When you complete uninstalling the driver, be sure to restart your computer. Otherwise, the computer may not operate correctly.
