Q - I have a C5500 and I upgraded my computer to Windows XP before I removed the MultiPASS Driver (upgraded from Windows 98, Me, NT 4.0). What must I do to install the MultiPASS C5500 Windows XP Driver?

A - To update from Windows 98/Me/NT 4.0 to the new Windows XP driver. You will need to uninstall the current installation without removing the MultiPASS database, download and install the Windows XP Driver and keep the existing database. See below for detailed instructions. You will be required to uninstall the Canon MultiPASS Suite 3.0x first, then the Canon MultiPASS ODBC Interface, and finally Canon ScanGear 4.00 for MultiPASS. Then install the new drivers for Windows XP, reboot your computer, and run Setup2.exe. Please remember to run Setup2.exe after you have installed the new drivers for Windows XP and rebooted your computer.

  1. Power on your MultiPASS C5500 and make sure it is connected to your computer.
  2. Power on your computer and log on as "Administrator".
  3. In the SysTray, right-click MultiPASS Server icon, select 'Close'.
  4. In the MultiPASS Status Monitor - Closing the MultiPASS Status Monitor will prevent any status messages such as Out of Paper, Paper Jam or Communication Errors from being displayed. Are you sure you want to close the MultiPASS Status Monitor? dialog, select 'Yes'.
  5. Uninstall the old drivers and MultiPASS Software by selecting 'Start', then 'Control Panel' and selecting 'Add or Remove Programs'.
  6. In the Add or Remove Programs dialog, select 'Canon MultiPASS Suite 3.01', then select 'Change/Remove'.
  7. At the Confirm File Deletion - Are you sure you want to completely remove Canon MultiPASS Suite 3.01 and all of its components? dialog, select 'Yes'.
  8. At the Uninstallation query - Do you want to permanently delete the existing MultiPASS database including your sent and received faxes, Fax Log and Address Book? dialog, select 'No'.
  9. At the Remove Shared File? The system indicates that the following shared file is no longer used by any programs. If any programs are still using this file and it is removed, those programs may not function. Are you sure you want to remove the shared file? dialog, select 'Yes To All'.
  10. At the Remove Shared File? You have chosen to remove all shared components which the system indicates are no longer being used. This may cause some programs not to function if they still require any of these files. Are you sure you want to proceed? dialog, select 'Yes'.
  11. At the Confirm File Deletion - Are you sure you want to completely remove Canon MultiPASS ODBC Interface and all of its components? dialog, select 'Yes'.
  12. At the Remove Shared File? The system indicates that the following shared file is no longer used by any programs. If any programs are still using this file and it is removed, those programs may not function. Are you sure you want to remove the shared file? dialog, select 'Yes To All'.
  13. At the Remove Shared File? You have chosen to remove all shared components which the system indicates are no longer being used. This may cause some programs not to function if they still require any of these files. Are you sure you want to proceed? dialog, select 'Yes'.
  14. At the Remove Programs From Your Computer - unInstallShield will remove the software Canon MultiPASS ODBC Interface from your computer. Please wait while each of the following components is removed. Uninstall successfully completed dialog, select 'OK'.
  15. At the Remove Programs From Your Computer - unInstallShield will remove the software Canon MultiPASS Suite 3.01 from your computer. Please wait while each of the following components is removed. Uninstall completed. Some elements could not be removed. You should manually remove items related to the application. dialog, select 'OK'.
  16. In the Add or Remove Programs dialog, select 'Canon ScanGear 4.0 for MultiPASS', then select 'Change/Remove'.
  17. At the Confirm File Deletion - Are you sure you want to completely remove Canon ScanGear 4.0 for MultiPASS? dialog, select 'Yes'
  18. At the Remove Shared File? The system indicates that the following shared file is no longer used by any programs. If any programs are still using this file and it is removed, those programs may not function. Are you sure you want to remove the shared file? dialog, select 'Yes To All'.
  19. At the Remove Shared File? You have chosen to remove all shared components which the system indicates are no longer being used. This may cause some programs not to function if they still require any of these files. Are you sure you want to proceed? dialog, select 'Yes'.
  20. At the Remove Programs From Your Computer - unInstallShield will remove the software Canon ScanGear 4.0 for MultiPASS from your computer. Please wait while each of the following components is removed. Uninstall successfully completed dialog, select 'OK'.
  21. At the Remove Programs From Your Computer - unInstallShield will remove the software Canon MultiPASS Suite 3.01 from your computer. Please wait while each of the following components is removed. Uninstall completed. Some elements could not be removed. You should manually remove items related to the application. dialog, select 'OK'.
  22. Close the Add or Remove Programs and Control Panel windows.
  23. Disconnect the printer cable to your MultiPASS C5500. Then restart your computer and log on as "Administrator". Select 'Start', 'Turn Off Computer', 'Restart'. (Your computer restarts)
  24. Download the new Windows XP Driver for the C5500 (XPC5500.exe) from the Canon Website to your computer desktop or wherever you save downloaded files.
  25. Now extract the Windows XP Driver. Double-click the downloaded file XPC5500.exe from where you saved the downloaded files. (Files Extract)
  26. At the Canon Extractor - Information. All items were successfully extracted. dialog, select 'OK'
  27. On the Windows taskbar, click 'Start', and then 'Run'. In the Run dialog box type "C:\Temp\C5500\Setup\Setup.exe". Follow the on-screen instructions. When the installation is complete, you will need to restart your PC before running Setup2.exe.
  28. Restart your computer and log on as "Administrator". Select 'Start', 'Turn Off Computer', 'Restart'. (Your computer restarts)
  29. On the Windows taskbar, click 'Start', and then 'Run'. In the Run dialog box type "C:\Temp\C5500\Setup\Setup2.exe".
  30. When the Hardware Installation dialog appears, select 'Continue Anyway'.
  31. When the Update for Windows XP dialog appears, select 'Yes'. (You will need to restart your PC before using the printer driver.)

Important: During the installation process, MultiPASS Setup will detect the existing database; click 'Yes' to use this database. After the installation, the MultiPASS C5500 Windows XP driver will keep your User Settings, Address Book and Saved Images.

Important: If the Windows File Protection - Files that are required for Windows to run property have been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain system stability, Windows must restore the original versions of these files. Insert your Windows XP CD-ROM now. dialog is displayed after step 21, select 'Cancel'. Then at the Windows File Protection - You choose not to restore the original versions of the files. This may affect Windows stability. Are you sure you want to keep these unrecognized file versions? dialog, select 'Yes'.
