SmartWorks MFP can scan to an FTP scan folder. To keep the FTP username and password secure, SmartWorks MFP User Accounts must be enabled to use the FTP protocol.
Note: The following example shows how to create a simple FTP site on a network PC, then configure SmartWorks MFP on the system controller to scan to that folder using FTP. This document is not intended as extensive training on FTP servers or the FTP communication protocol, but provide a simple means to test the basic functionality.
For further information, contact your local network System Administrator.
FTP Protocol
Configure a network PC to be an FTP server and share a scan folder.
On the network PC:
- Preparation
- Create a user with a password that SmartWorks MFP can use to access the FTP share.
E.g. username=test, password=test
- Create a folder on the PC you wish to share to receive scans.
E.g. Documents\scan
- Right click the Windows Start Menu and select Command Prompt (Admin). Type "ipconfig" and record the IP address of the PC.
E.g. IP address = 192.168.1.226
- Enable the FTP service.
- Open the Control Panel - Programs and Features. Select "Turn Windows Features on/off".
- Expand "Internet Information Service" and enable FTP Server (both FTP Extensibility and FTP Service). In addition, ensure Web Management Tools and World Wide Web Services are selected.
- Click OK and allow the system to install these features.
- Restart the PC.
- Configure the FTP service.
- Open Control Panel - Administrative Tools and select "Internet Information Services". Right click Sites and click "Add FTP site".
- Give the FTP site a name and browse to select the folder you wish to share from Step 1b above..
- Click Next and from the drop down, select the IP address of the PC (as shown in Step 1d). Select No to SSL as it is easier for this example to test without SSL..
- Click Next and select "Basic" Authentication and allow access to specific users. Type the user name you set up in Step 1a above and enable both Read and Write access. Click Finish..
- The FTP site will now be listed in the left panel and its settings can be edited in teh right panel.
- Configure the Firewall.
- If using the Windows (Defender) Firewall, open Control Panel - Windows (Defender) Firewall. Select "Allow an App through...." (if using another firewall, configure as necessary).
- Change Settings and select FTP server Private and Public.
- Share the Folder/
- Open Explorer, right click on the folder and select Properties.
- Select the Security tab, then Edit, then Add. Type the username from Step 1a above, then click "Check name" and the user will be listed.
- Make sure that the user has full control, click OK, and then OK again.
On the System Controller, configure a SmarkWorks MFP User's Scan folder to the FTP folder.
- Log in as Administrator and add a user with a username and password of your choice. These user details do not need to match those used elsewhere.
E.g. username = ftp, password = ftp.
- Set the User's Scan folder to match the FTP server's address.
E.g. ftp://192.168.1.226
If configured correctly, the "Test Network Connection" button will response with a "Passed" message/
- Log in to SmartWorks MFP as the user created in Step 6 above and you will see the folder is pointing to the FTP server.
- Scan files saved in this FTP folder can be accessed via various means that support the FTP protocol. E.g. Internet explorer and Windows Explorer as shown below, or a third party FTP client software.
