Contrast detection usually can’t initially establish the direction to drive the lens for sharp focus, nor can it predictably halt the lens’ focus drive at the instant sharp focus is reached. Instead, it reads sharpness of an area of the imaging sensor, and looks for when the greatest contrast among adjacent pixels on the image sensor occurs.

AE Lock with Hold
|
A press of the rear AE Lock button (marked with an asterisk icon — Canon’s symbol for AE Lock operation) in P, Tv, or Av mode will lock in place the exposure settings for whatever lighting the camera is reading at that moment. The idea, of course, is to allow the shooter to now recompose a shot, without exposure changing if the camera reads different brightness values in a scene.
