If you wish to use the scanner in all modes, inlcuding " Scan to PC", the scanner, as well as the printer , must be connected directly to the network via ethernet cable. In this configuration, it is not necessary to manually configure the IP address of either devices, you can use DHCP and the IP addresses are not required to be consecutive.
