Description

Learn how to scan photos and documents with the PIXMA MX870 using MP Navigator EX on a Windows PC.

Solution

You can scan documents such as photographs and text on the scanner glass (also known as the platen).


 

Scan photos and documents

  1. From the Windows desktop, double-click on the MP Navigator EX   icon, or go to Start All Programs > Canon Utilities > MP Navigator EX.
  • The MP Navigator EX navigation mode screen or One-click mode screen opens.
    • Navigation mode screen:

 

  • One-click mode screen:
  • If the One-click mode screen opens, select the Switch mode   button to switch to the Navigation mode.

  • If the Show this window at startup checkbox isn't selected, the last used screen opens.

  • You can scan and save at the same time if you select the corresponding icon on the One-click mode screen. See the section below for details

  1. Point to Scan/Import and select Photos/Documents (Platen).

  2. Place the document face-down on the scanner glass, and select Document Type. Refer to the table below.

Color Photo

Allow 3/8 inches (1 cm) or more space between the edges of the scanner glass and the document.

Black and White Photo

Color Document

Align a corner of the document with the corner at the arrow of the scanner glass.

  • When you select Color Photo or Black and White Photo, the position or size of the image may not scan correctly if you don't leave 3/8 inches (1 cm) or more space between the edges of the scanner glass and the document.

  • When you select Magazine(Color), the Descreen function will enable and a scan will take longer than usual. To reset the Descreen function, disable Descreen in the Scan Settings dialog box.

  • Select Text(OCR) to convert hand-written text or image data of printed text to text data with OCR software.
  1. ​Select Specify... and set the preferences as required.

  2. The Scan Settings Dialog Box opens. Select the Document Size and Scanning Resolution.

  3. Tap Scan. The scan starts.

  4. When the scan completes, the Scan Complete dialog box opens. Select Scan to scan the next document, or Exit to end.
  • The scanned image appears in the thumbnail list area.

  1. Edit the scanned image as required.

    • When there are multiple images, select the image you want to edit. (Selected images are outlined in orange.)

    • ​Drag the mouse or use Shift + arrow keys to select multiple images. (An orange frame appears around the selected image.)

    • Use edit tools to rotate images, select a part of an image, etc.

  2. Select Save or Save as PDF file.

  3. Select the following settings as required:
  • When you select Save:

    • The default folder is MP Navigator EX in the Pictures folder (Windows Vista) or in the My Pictures folder (Windows XP and Windows 2000).

    • You can't select JPEG/Exif when Document Type is Text(OCR).

    • The Save dialog box opens. Select the destination folderfile name and file type.

  • ​​When you select Save as PDF file:

    • The Save as PDF file dialog box opens. Select the file type, file name and destination folder. Select the Set button for more options.

  • Select from the following PDF file types:

PDF

When multiple images are selected, each image is saved as a separate PDF file.

PDF(Multiple Pages)

Multiple images are saved in one PDF file. PDF(Multiple Pages) displays when you select multiple images.

PDF(Add Page)

Selected images are added to a specified PDF file. The images are added to the end of the PDF file. You can't rearrange pages of the PDF file to which images are added.

You can select only PDF files created with MP Navigator EX, MP Navigator or CanoScan Toolbox. You can't select PDF files created or edited with other applications.

  1. Select Save. Your scans save according to the settings.

  2. To further use/edit the scanned images on MP Navigator EX, select Open saved location in the Save Complete dialog box. The saved images appear in the View & Use screen.

In the PDF Settings dialog box, you can select the PDF compression type and other advanced settings for creating PDF files.

Select one of these options.

  • Enable keyword search - Select this checkbox to convert characters in a document to text data. This enables an easy search by keyword.

  • Document Language - Select the language of the document you want to scan.

  • Detect the orientation of text documents and rotate images - Select this checkbox to detect the orientation of the document from the scanned text and rotate the image to the correct orientation.
Note This function may not work properly depending on the document language.

Note Only text documents written in languages that can be selected from Document Language are supported.
  • The orientation of the following types of documents may not be corrected, as the text can't be detected correctly.
    • Resolution is outside the range of 300 dpi to 600 dpi

    • Font size is outside the range of 8 points to 48 points

    • Documents containing special fonts, effects, italics, or hand-written text

    • ​Documents with patterned backgrounds

  • Correct slanted document - Select this checkbox to detect the scanned text and correct the angle (within -0.1 to -10 degrees or +0.1 to +10 degrees) of the document.
    • The following types of documents may not be corrected, since the text can't be detected correctly:

      • Documents with text lines inclined more than 10 degrees or the angles vary by line.

      • Documents with both vertical and horizontal text.

      • Documents with extremely large or small fonts.

      • Documents with small amounts of text.

      • ​Documents with both vertical and horizontal lines (tables).

      • Documents with figures/images or hand-written text.

  • Select a compression type for saving -  The following images can be compressed with high efficiency.
    Note In Windows 2000, Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 2 or later is required to use this function.

  • PDF Compression
    • Standard - You should normally select this setting.

    • High - Compresses the file size when saving, which allows you to reduce the load on your network/server.

    • Highly compressed PDF images may degrade if you repeatedly save them with high compression.

    • Images with resolutions within the range of 75 dpi to 600 dpi.

  • Security - Set passwords for use when you open, edit or print the created PDF files.
    • This function is not available when images are automatically saved after scanning, such as when scanning from the One-click mode screen or scanning using the operation panel of the machine.

    • Select Password Security and set passwords in the Password Security Settings dialog box.
