Procedure for setting white balance PowerShot A710 IS

Solution

WB: Setting the White Balance - PowerShot A710

Normally, the (Auto) white balance setting selects an optimal white balance. When the (Auto) setting cannot produce natural looking colors, change the white balance using a setting appropriate for the light source. This feature is NOT available in the shooting mode.

Auto

Settings are automatically set by the camera.

Daylight

For recording outdoors on a bright day.

Cloudy

For recording under overcast, shady or twilight skies.

Tungsten

For recording under tungsten and bulb-type 3-wavelength fluorescent lighting.

Fluorescent

For recording under warm-white, cool-white or warm-white (3-wavelength) fluorescent lighting.

Fluorescent H

For recording under daylight fluorescent, or daylight fluorescent-type 3-wavelength fluorescent lighting.
Underwater Appropriate for shooting images with the Waterproof Case WP-DC6 (sold separately). This mode yields image data in the optimal white balance to record images with natural hues by reducing the bluish tone.

Custom

For recording with the optimal white balance data memorized in the camera from a whitecolored object, such as white paper or cloth.

  1. FUNC. Menu * (Auto).

  2. Select * (Auto) using the or button.
    * The current setting is displayed.

  • The white balance cannot be adjusted when the photo effect is set to (Sepia) or (B/W).

Setting a Custom White Balance

You can set a custom white balance to obtain the optimal setting for the shooting conditions by having the camera evaluate an object, such as a piece of white paper or cloth, or a photo-quality gray card that you wish to establish as the standard white color.

In particular, take a custom white balance reading for the following situations that are difficult for the (Auto) setting to detect correctly.

  • Shooting close-ups
  • Shooting subjects of monotone color (such as sky, sea or forest)
  • Shooting with a peculiar source of light (such as a mercury-vapor lamp)
  1. FUNC. Menu * (Auto) (Custom).

  2. Aim the camera at the white paper or cloth, or a gray card, and press the <MENU> button.
If you are viewing it with the LCD monitor, ensure that the center frame is completely filled with the white image. If you are using the optical viewfinder, ensure that the entire field is filled.
  • You can shoot the image right after selecting settings by pressing the shutter button. This screen will appear again, once the image is shot.

  • You are recommended to set the shooting mode to P and the exposure compensation setting to [?0] before setting a custom white balance. The correct white balance may not be obtained when the exposure setting is incorrect (image appears completely black or white).
  • Shoot with the same settings as when reading the white balance data. If the settings differ, the optimal white balance may not be set. In particular, the following should not be changed:
    • ISO Speed
    • Flash
      • Setting the flash to on or off is recommended. If the flash fires when reading the white balance data with the flash set to (Auto) or (Auto with redeye reduction), make sure that you also use the flash when you shoot.
  • Since the white balance data cannot be read in Stitch Assist mode, preset the white balance in another shooting mode beforehand.
  • The camera will retain the custom white balance setting that you record even if you reset the camera to the default settings.
