Manual Focus on the EOS C700 models

Description

Focus manually using the focus ring on the lens. You can also perform this function remotely using Browser Remote on a connected network device.
The autofocus mode is set to [One Shot] by default. If you need to change the setting, start the procedure from the beginning. Otherwise, you can start from step 3 below.

Solution

Manual Focus

  1. Open the focus [AF Mode] submenu.
    Setup screen: ALT  [AF]  [OPTIONS]  [AF Mode]
    Monitoring menu: EVF  [Camera Setup] ( [Focus]  [AF Mode]
  2. Select [One Shot] and then press SET.
    • On an EF lens, you can set the lens's focus mode switch to MF. On a compatible EF Cinema/broadcast lens, you can enable manual adjustment on the lens.
  3. Turn the focus ring to adjust the focus.
    • Alternatively, open the [AF] screen (ALT  [AF]) and turn the SELECT dial to adjust the focus.
 NOTES
  • With some EF lenses, you may be able to operate the focus ring even when the focus mode switch is set to AF.
  • If you operate the zoom after focusing, the focus on the subject may be lost.
  • If you focus manually and then leave the camera with the power turned on, the focus on the subject may be lost after a while. This possible slight shift in focus is a result of the internal temperature rising in the camera and lens. check the focus before resuming shooting.
  • When adjusting the focus, be carefull not to touch the front of the lens or moving parts on the lens except for the focus ring.
  • when an optional RC-V100 Remote Controller is connected to the camera, you can adjust the focus with the remote controller's FOCUS dial. At default settings, turn the dial right to focus farther and left to focus nearer.
  • To be able to adjust the focus using an accessory connected to a lens (itself connected to the camera using the 12-pin interface cable), you will need to change the MENU  [Camera Setup]  [Focus Control] setting to give priority to the lens.

Using the Focus Assistance Functions
In order to focus more accurately, you can use the following focus assistance functions: Dual Pixel Focus Guide (C700 C700 FF only), an onscreen guide that shows you if the picture is in focus; peaking, which creates a clearer contrast by emphasizing the outlines of the subject; and magnification, which enlarges the image on the screen. You can use peaking and the focus guide or peaking and magnification simultaneously for greater effect.

C700 C700 FF Dual Pixel Focus Guide
The focus guide gives you an intuitive visual indication of the current focus distance and the direction and amount of adjustment necessary to bring the picture into full focus. When used in combination with face detection, the guide will focus on the vicinity of the eyes of the person detected as the main subject.
  1. Activate the focus guide
    Setup screen: ALT  [F. ASSIST.]  [GUIDE] (set it to [On])
    Monitoring menu: EVF  [Assist. Functions] ( [Focus Guide]  [Activate]  [On]
    • Alternatively, you can press an assigneable button set to [Focus Guide].
  2. If necessary, move the focus guide frame.
    Setup screen: Press [ FRAME] and then press [], [], [], [].
    Monitoring menu: Use the joystick or SELECT dial on the optional viewfinder.
    • The frame cannot be moved when tracking is activated or a face detection frame is displayed.
    • Press [CENTER] (setup screen) or press the BACK button on the optional viewfinder to return the frame to the center position.
  3. You can also display a second frame around a different subject.
    Setup screen: From the [Focus Assistance Functions] screen in step 1, [OPTIONS]  [Focus Guide]  [Display 2nd Frame]  [On]
    Monitoring menu: From the same submenu, [Display 2nd Frame] ​ [On]
    • When the following screens are displayed on the control display, you can press SET to switch the focus guide display from one frame to the other.
      - The [AF] screen (ALT  [AF]) and its [Move frame] screen (ALT  [AF]  [ FRAME])
      - The [Focus Assistance Functions] screen (ALT  [F. ASSIST.]) and its [Move frame] screen (ALT  [F. ASSIST.]  [ FRAME])


 NOTES
  • With subjects or in situations where autofocus may not work well, the focus guide may not work correctly.
  • The focus guide cannot be used in the following cases:
    • While the focus is being adjusted automatically using one-shot AF or continuous AF.
    • When the aperture value used is F11 or larger.
    • When a manual focus lens is attached to the camera, except for compatible EF Cinema lenses.
  • When the focus guide and face detection functions are used together, the focus guide may not focus the main subject's eyes correctly, depending on the direction in which the face is turned.

Peaking
The camera offers two peaking levels.
  1. Press the PEAKING button.
    • Alternatively, you can press ALT  [F. ASSIST.]  [PEAKING] to turn peaking on and off. From the monitoring menu you can use the EVF  [Assist. Functions] ( [Peaking]  [VIDEO Output] and [MON.+HDMI Output] settings to turn the peaking on and off separately on the optional viewfinder or on external monitors.
    • On monitors connected to one of the MON. terminals or the HDMI OUT terminal, the peaking icon (PEAK 1 or PEAK 2) appears at the right of the monitoring screen and the outlines in the image will be emphasized, depending on the focus.
    • Press the button again to turn off peaking.
  2. Open the peaking's [Select] submenu to select the peaking level.\

    Monitoring menu: EVF  [Assist. Functions] ( [Peaking]  [Select]
  3. Select the desired level and then press SET.

Magnification
You can select from two levels of magnification, which depend on sensor mode.
  1. Press the MAGN. button.
    • Alternatively, you can press ALT  [F. ASSIST.]  [MAGN.] to turn the magnification on and off. From the monitoring menu you can use the EVF  [Assist. Functions] ( [Magnification]  [VIDEO Output] and [MON.+HDMI Output] settings to turn the magnification on and off separately on the optional viewfinder or on external monitors.
    • On monitors connected to one of the MON. terminals or the HDMI OUT terminal, the MAGN.  appears at the top right of the monitoring screen and the center of the screen* is magnified approximately 2x (C700 FF C700 FF PL 3x, when the sensor mode is set to [Full Frame]).
    • The orange frame displayed on the top right of the screen (magnification frame) shows the approximate part of the image shown magnified.
  2. If necessary, move the magnification frame to check other parts of the image.
    Setup screen: ALT  [F. ASSIST.]  [ FRAME] and then press  [], [], [], [].
    Monitoring menu: Use the joystick or SELECT dial on the optional viewfinder.
    • Press [CENTER] (setup screen) or press the BACK button on the optional viewfinder to return the magnification frame to the center position.
  3. Press SET (setup screen) or the joystick (monitoring menu) to change the magnification level.
    • Press repeatedly to switch back and forth between approx. 2x and 4x magnification.(C700 FF C700 FF PL approx. 3x or 6x, when the sensor mode is set to [Full Frame]).
  4. Press the MAGN. button again to cancel the magnification.
* If one of the AF frames or a face detection frame is displayed on the screen, the area around the active frame will be magnified instead.

 NOTES
  • About Peaking/Magnification:
    • You can use the ALT  [F. ASSIST.]  [OPTIONS]  [Peaking]  [Peaking 1] and [Peaking 2] settings to set the color, gain and frequency of the two peaking levels independently of each other.
    • You can select individually through which terminals to output (on which monitoring devices to display) the assistance functions with the output settings under ALT  [F. ASSIST.]  [OPTIONS]  [Peaking] and [Magnification]. When the HDMI OUT terminal's resolution is set to 4096x2160 or 3840x2160, the assistance functions will not be displayed on the monitor connected to the HDMI OUT terminal.
    • You can also use the [Focus Assist. B&W] setting under ALT  [F. ASSIST.]  [OPTIONS]  [Peaking] and [Magnification] to display the camera's image in black & white while using the respective assistance function.
    • The assistance functions will not affect your recordings.
    • You can set ALT  [F. ASSIST.]  [OPTIONS]  [Magnification]  [Available While Rec] to [On] to be able to use magnification while recording a clip. However, in such case, you will not be able to use face detection and tracking, or display the camera's live view image on the Browser Remote screen.
