Formatting a SD type Memory Card
You should always format a new SD card or one from which you wish to erase all images and other data. Formatting may restore function to a SD card if it returns a memory card error in the display.
 Please note that formatting (initializing) a SD card erases all data, including protected images and other file types. Please check the contents of the SD card before formatting it. |
- If the camera does not work properly, the inserted SD card may be malfunctioning. Reformatting the SD card may solve the problem.
- When a non-Canon brand SD card is malfunctioning, reformatting it may solve the problem. SD cards formatted in another camera, computer or peripheral device may not operate correctly. When that happens, reformat the SD card with this camera. If formatting in the camera does not work properly, turn the camera off and reinsert the SD card. Then turn the camera back on and format again.
- The capacity of the SD card displayed after formatting will be less than the rated capacity of the SD card. This is not a malfunction of the SD card or camera.

- Press the <MENU> button, and then the
arrow on the omni selector. The [ 
(Set up)] menu appears.
- Select [Format] using the
or 
arrow on the omni selector or Main Control Dial, then press the <FUNC./SET> button.
- Select [OK] using the
or arrow on the omni selector, then press the <FUNC./SET> button.
- To cancel instead of formatting, select [Cancel] and press the <FUNC./SET> button.
- To perform a low level format, use the button to select [Low Level Format] and the or button to add a check mark.
- You can stop formatting a card when [Low Level Format] is selected by pressing the <FUNC./SET> button. You can still use a card without problem when formatting is halted, but its data will be erased.
- Press the <MENU> button.
- This operation is not available in mode.
- Low Level Form: We recommend you select [Low Level Format] when you think that the recording/reading speed of a memory card has dropped. A low level format may require 2 to 3 minutes with some memory cards.
