Description

Learn how to fix a "Printer is Offline" message if it appears when you try to print on a PIXMA MP280.

Solution

If you try to print and see a message that the printer is offline, here are some things to check.
  • Make sure the printer is plugged in and turned ON.

  • Reseat the USB cable to make sure the connections are secure.  Make sure that the printer is connected directly to the computer and not into a USB hub.

  • If you're using a Windows PC, make sure that the "Use Printer Offline" option is not enabled.  To check, follow these steps.

    1. Hold down the Windows  key on the keyboard and type the letter R. This opens a Run box.

    2. In the Run box, type control printers, then select OK.

Control printers types into Run box

    3. Right-click on the icon for your printer, then select See what's printing.

Printer icon selected, then drop-down shown with See what's printing selected.

    4. Select the Printer menu, then remove the check from Use Printer Offline.

Use Printer Offline shown with checkmark next to it (you need to unselect this)

    5. Try to print again.

If this doesn't resolve the problem

  • Make sure that you're sending the print job to the correct printer. If you send a print job to an incorrect printer (one that isn't connected), you'll see this message:

Screen: The printer is offline. Check that the printer is connected and the power is on.

If you send a print job to the correct (connected) printer, you see this message:

    Message: Printing
