Description

Using the internal extender on the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x

Solution

Internal Extender Switch

The extender switch lever allows you to set the focal distance of the lens to 1.4x.
Slide the extender switch lock toward the front of the lens.
  • This allows the extender switch lever to move.
Use the extender switch lever to select a focal distance of either 1x or 1.4x.
  • This allows you to change the focal distance of the lens to either 1x or 1.4x.
Slide the extender switch lock toward the back of the lens.
  • This locks the extender switch lever in place.

The extender switch lock prevents the extender switch lever from being moved inadvertently. It does not secure the switch lever to the side edge. Be sure to use the lock even when the switch lever is set at 1x in order to prevent it from being moved inadvertently.

When the internal extender is used (set to 1.4x), the AF speed will become slower to retain proper control.

The internal extender installed in this lens can only be used under certain conditions depending on the type of EOS camera used. Please use the information below to determine which group your camera belongs to and follow the applicable instructions before use.
  • Group 1 cameras
EOS-1Ds Mark III, EOS-1Ds Mark II, EOS-1Ds, EOS 1D Mark IV, EOS-1D Mark III, EOS-1D Mark II N, EOS-1D Mark II, EOS-1D, EOS 5D, EOS 5D Mark II, EOS 7D, EOS 60D, EOS 50D, EOS 40D, EOS 30D, EOS REBEL T3i/600D, EOS REBEL T2i/550D, EOS REBEL T1i/500D, EOS REBEL XSi/450D, EOS REBEL T3/1100D, EOS REBEL XS/1000D, EOS DIGITAL REBEL XTi/400D DIGITAL, EOS-1V/HS, EOS-3
  • Group 2 cameras
Any EOS camera which is not listed in Group 1

When using the lens with Group 1 cameras
The internal extender switch can be moved only when shooting with the viewfinder.
Do not operate the camera or lens while switching.
Not doing so may prevent the camera or lens from working properly*.
When using the lens with Group 2 cameras
The internal extender switch can be moved regardless of whether shooting with the viewfinder, or in Live View mode, or in movie mode.
Do not operate the camera or lens while switching. (Switching is possible by half-pressing the shutter button.)
Not doing so may prevent the camera or lens from working properly*.

* There are times when an error message will be displayed and shooting operation is prevented. If this occurs, please turn the camera OFF and then ON.
Although shooting is possible, the AF function may not work properly. Also, there are times when images will not be processed correctly by the camera's internal image correction function or by DPP software since accurate lens information is not recorded.

Precautions for Using the Internal Extender
  • Please do not move the internal extender switch in any of the following situations or when the camera is in operation. Doing so will cause the camera or lens to malfunction.
    • When the shutter button is pressed half way down. (not applicable to Group 2 cameras)
    • When the shutter button is pressed all the way down.
    • When the lens or camera is in operation (during Auto Focus, Image Stabilization*, exposure, continuous shooting, use of the focus preset, power focus operation, etc.).
    • When the camera is set to Live View shooting. (not applicable to Group 2 cameras)
    • When the camera is set to Movie Shooting. (not applicable to Group 2 cameras).
If you have moved the internal extender switch in any of the situations listed above, please be sure to turn the camera OFF. Then, move the switch back to the correct position when the viewfinder is activated, and when the camera and lens are not in operation.
  • When moving the internal extender switch, please wait around two seconds before switching to different shooting styles (shooting with the viewfinder, Live View shooting, and movie shooting). Not doing so may result in an error message being displayed (ERR01) and prevent shooting operation. Turn the camera OFF and then ON to clear the error message.
  • Be sure that the extender switch lever is positioned correctly. Not positioning the lever correctly will create shadown in images and cause AF, AE, and other functions to not work properly.
  • When set to 1.4x, the amount of light is reduced where the focal length was extended (the f-number becomes one step darker). Therefore, please adjust the exposure after switching to the 1.4x setting.
  • The focus position may be altered due to changing the internal extender setting. Therefore, please adjust the focus after changing the internal extender setting.
  • When the internal extender setting is changed, the camera will display an aperture value between f/4 and f/5.6 (maximum aperture). However, the aperture value displayed will not change when the lens is not in operation or when the lens shuts down in order to save power. when this occurs, the correct aperture value can be displayed by pressing the shutter button halfway to reactivate the lens.

    * The Image Stabilizer will remain in operation for around two seconds after lifting your finger off of the shutter button.
