Troubleshooting the Firewire (IEEE-1394) connection with legacy camcorders

Solution

If communication between the camcorder and the computer via the DV connection cannot be established please try the following steps to correct the issue.
  • With the computer already running and fully booted up disconnect and then reconnect the camcorder then power the camcorder on in playback mode.
  • We recommend powering the camcorder from a household power source while it is connected to the computer.
  • When a proper connection has been established the message "DV IN" will be displayed on the camcorder. Once "DV IN" is displayed this indicates that the camcorder is ready to transfer video to the computer.
  • If "DV IN" is flashing on the camcorders display this indicates that the camcorder cannot establish a proper connection with the computer. Try plugging the camcorder into a different IEEE-1394 port on the computer and/or test the connection using another known good cable. Further testing can also be done by trying the camcorder with another known good computer.
  • If the "DV IN" message continues to flash regardless of the computer or cable connections or if it flashes without a cable connected your camcorder may require service.
  • To service your camcorder please follow the steps below.

    - From the www.canondv.com homepage please select Support. Once at the support page use the dropdown menus to select your camera model. This will take you to the support page for that camera. From the support page click on the "Find a Service Location" link.
