About the histogram
The histogram is a graph that shows the frequency distribution of an image's data values. It is a useful tool for checking the brightness or darkness of an image or the trends in the colors it uses. There are two different ways to view the data:
Brightness Display - Trends in exposure levels and overall gradations
RGB Display - Color saturation and gradation
Note that you can switch between the [Brightness] and [RGB] displays using [ : Histogram disp.] in the playback menu.
Brightness display
This histogram is a graph showing the distribution of the brightness level. The horizontal axis shows the brightness (darker on the left and brighter on the right), while the vertical axis shows how many pixels exist for each brightness level. The more pixels there are toward the left, the darker the image. The more pixels there are toward the right, the brighter the image. If there are too many pixels on the left, the shadow detail is lost. If there are too many pixels on the right, the highlight detail is lost.

RGB display
This histogram is a graph showing the distribution of the brightness level for red, green, and blue. The horizontal axis shows the brightness level (darker on the left and brighter on the right), while the vertical axis indicates how many pixels exist for each color brightness level. The more pixels there are toward the left, the darker and less prominent the color. The more pixels there are toward the right, the brighter and denser the color. If there are too many pixels on the left, the color information is lacking. If there are too many pixels on the right, the color is too saturated with no gradation.
