Printing Does Not Start

  1. Check1 Make sure printer is securely plugged in and press ON button to turn it on.

    The POWER lamp flashes while the printer is initializing. Wait until the POWER lamp stops flashing and remains lit.

    • If you are printing large data such as photos or other graphics, printing may take longer to start. The POWER lamp flashes while the computer is processing data and sending it to the printer. Wait until printing starts.

  2. Check2 If printer is turned off for some time, it may take longer to start printing.

    Wait until printing starts.

  3. Check3 Make sure printer is properly connected to computer.

    If you are using a USB cable, make sure it is securely connected to both the printer and the computer. When the USB cable is securely plugged in, check the following:

    • If you are using a relay device such as a USB hub, disconnect it, connect the printer directly to the computer, and retry the printing. If printing starts normally, there is a problem with the relay device. Contact the vendor of the relay device.

    • There could also be a problem with the USB cable. Replace the USB cable and retry the printing.

    If you use the printer over a LAN, make sure the printer is connected to the network with a LAN cable or is correctly set up for network use.

  4. Check4 Is direct connection enabled?

    To print using a mode other than the direct connection, disable the direct connection first.

  5. Check5 Make sure paper settings match information set for rear tray.

    If the paper settings do not match the information set for the rear tray, an error message appears on the LCD. Follow the instructions on the LCD to solve the problem.

  6. Check6 If printing from a computer, delete unnecessary print jobs.

  7. Check7 Is feed slot cover closed?

    If the feed slot cover is opened, close it slowly and press the OK button.

  8. Check8 Is manual feed tray in paper feed position?

    If the manual feed tray is in the paper jam clearing position, return the tray to the paper feed position and press the OK button on the printer.

  9. Check9 Is tank cover closed?

    If the tank cover is opened when printing, close it.

  10. Check10 Does page size setting match size of paper loaded in printer?

    • For Windows:

      Press the OK button on the printer to clear the error. Then check Page Size setting in Page Setup sheet of the printer driver and load paper that is the same size as the setting and try printing again.

      Set the printer not to detect the width of the paper using the printer driver.

      To set the printer not to detect the width of the paper, open the printer driver setup window, and in Custom Settings under Maintenance sheet, select Disable paper width detection when printing from computer check box, and then click OK.

      * Clear Disable paper width detection when printing from computer check box again once printing is complete, and then click OK.

    • For Mac OS:

      Press the OK button on the printer to clear the error. Then check the Paper Size setting in the Page Setup dialog and load paper that is the same size as the setting and try printing again.

      Set the printer not to detect the width of the paper using the Canon IJ Printer Utility.

      To set the printer not to detect the width of the paper, open the Canon IJ Printer Utility, select Custom Settings in the pop-up menu, select Disable paper width detection when printing from computer check box, and then click Apply.

      * Clear the Disable paper width detection when printing from computer check box again once printing is complete, and then click Apply.

  11. Check11 Are media type and paper size specified properly in the printer driver?

    When the media type is specified to Photo Paper Pro Premium Matte, Premium Fine Art Smooth, or Matte Photo Paper in the printer driver, specify a paper size from the following size that has wide margins.

    • A4 (Margin 25)

    • Letter (Margin 25)/US Letter (Margin 25)

    • A3 (Margin 25)

    • A3+ (Margin 25)

    • A2 (Margin 25)

    • 17"x22" (Margin 25)/C (Margin 25)

    Important

    • By canceling the safety margin regulation with the following method, you can print with normal paper size.

      • For Windows:

        Click Print Options on Page Setup sheet of the printer driver. Then select Cancel the safety margin regulation for paper size check box in the dialog that appears.

      • For Mac OS:

        Select Cancel Margin Regulation check box in Paper Detailed Settings in the Print dialog.

      If you print with normal paper size, conditions such as paper abrasion may cause paper stains or deterioration of print quality depending on the environment. We recommend that you print with a paper size that has wide margins.

  12. Check12 Is your printer's printer driver is selected when printing?

    The printer will not print properly if you are using a printer driver for a different printer.

    • For Windows:

      Make sure "Canon XXX series" (where "XXX" is your printer's name) is selected in the Print dialog box.

      • To make the printer the one selected by default, select Set as Default Printer.

    • For Mac OS:

      Make sure your printer's name is selected in Printer in the Print dialog.

      • To make the printer the one selected by default, select the printer for Default printer.

  13. Check13 Set correct printer port. (Windows)

    Make sure the correct printer port is set.

    1. Log in using an account with administrator privileges.

    2. Make the following settings.

      • In Windows 8.1 or Windows 8, select Control Panel from Settings charm on Desktop > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers.

      • In Windows 7, select Devices and Printers from Start menu.

      • In Windows Vista, select Start menu > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Printers.

    3. Open printer driver properties.

      • In Windows 8.1, Windows 8, or Windows 7, right-click "Canon XXX series" icon (where "XXX" is your printer's name), and then select Printer properties.

      • In Windows Vista, right-click "Canon XXX series" icon (where "XXX" is your printer's name), and then select Properties.

    4. Click Ports tab to check port settings.

      Make sure a port named "USBnnn" (where "n" is a number) with "Canon XXX series" appearing in Printer column is selected for Print to the following port(s).

      • If setting is incorrect:

        Reinstall the printer driver from the Setup CD-ROM or the Canon website.

      • Printing does not start even though the printer is connected to the computer using a USB cable and the port named "USBnnn" is selected:

        In Windows 8.1 or Windows 8, select My Printer on Start screen to start My Printer. If My Printer is not displayed on Start screen, select Search charm, and then search for "My Printer".

        Set the correct printer port on Diagnose and Repair Printer. Follow the on-screen instructions to set the correct printer port, and then select your printer's name.

        In Windows 7 or Windows Vista, click Start and select All programs, Canon Utilities, Canon My Printer, Canon My Printer, and then select Diagnose and Repair Printer. Follow the on-screen instructions to set the correct printer port, and then select your printer's name.

        If the problem is not resolved, reinstall the printer driver from the Setup CD-ROM or the Canon website.

  14. Check14 Is print data extremely large? (Windows)

    Click Print Options on Page Setup sheet of the printer driver. Then make sure Prevention of Print Data Loss is set to On (Weak) in the dialog that appears.

    If printing does not start even though Prevention of Print Data Loss is set to On (Weak), set it to On (Strong) and start printing again.

    * This may reduce print quality.

  15. Check15 If printing from your computer, restart computer.
