CSTART.DLL error

If you receive a message that states "Cstart.dll: A device attached to the system is not functioning" while installing or opening your MultiPASS Suite, perform the following steps to correct:

  1. Cancel out of the error message, and close any open applications or programs.
  2. If it is not already inserted, place your MultiPASS installation CDROM into the CDROM drive. If you received two CDROM disks with your MultiPASS, insert the one that says Install Me First.
Note: If the installation program automatically starts, 'Cancel' the installation.
  3. Open Windows Explorer by selecting 'Start', 'Programs', 'Windows Explorer'.
  4. In the left column, go down the list until you see your CDROM drive. (You should see the MultiPASS or Canon Creative name next to it.) Click on the CDROM drive to highlight it.
  5. On the right side of the screen, look for the file 'Cstart.dll'. Click on it to highlight it.
  6. At the top of the screen, select 'Edit', then 'Copy'.
  7. On the left side of the screen, go up to the 'Windows' folder and click on the + to the left of it.
  8. Now go down to the 'System' folder and click on it to highlight it.
  9. Click on 'Edit', then 'Paste'. This copies the 'Cstart.dll' file into the Windows\System folder.
  10. Close Windows Explorer.
  11. You should now be able to accomplish the procedure that caused the error message to appear.

Note: If you were installing the MultiPASS software, you may now receive a message asking if you want to overwrite the read-only file Cstart.dll. Answer 'No' to this question, and continue installation.
