Shooting with the Digital Tele Converter

Digital Zoom

When the LCD monitor is on, you can shoot with a combined optical and digital zoom factor of approximately 16x. This provides a combined Optical and Digital Zoom of approximately 35 - 840 mm (focal length) in 35mm film equivalent terms. Digital Zoom cannot be used in Postcard or Widescreen resolution modes.

Shooting Characteristics

Standard 35 - 840 mm Enables shooting at zoom factors of up to 16x with digital and optical zoom combined.
Off 35 - 210 mm Enables shooting without digital zoom.
1.5x* 52.5 - 336 mm Digital zoom is fixed at the selected zoom factor, and the focal length shifts to the telephoto end. This enables a faster shutter speed and less chance of camera shake than a shot taken at the same angle of view with [Standard] or [Off].
1.9x* 66.5 - 420 mm

* Indicates that the Digital Tele Converter is being used.

Please note that the image will appear with more grain as the digital zoom factor increases.

  1. Set the camera to (Rec.) mode and press the <MENU> button to display the record menu.
  2. Use the or buttons to select [Digital Zoom].


  3. Use the or button to select [Standard],* [Off], [1.6x] or [2.0x] and press the <MENU> button. The display will return to the Shooting screen.
    *Default Setting.
  4. Press the zoom lever toward and shoot.


    • The combined optical and digital zoom factor appears on the LCD monitor.
    • Based on the number of recording pixels set, the Safety Zoom feature calculates the maximum zoom factor beyond which image quality will begin to deteriorate. The digital zoom pauses at this zoom factor for a moment, and appears on the LCD monitor
    • When you press the zoom lever toward , the zoom stops when the lens reaches the maximum optical telephoto setting.
    • If you press the button again, you can zoom in even closer. In this case, the displayed zoom factor changes from white to blue.
    • Press the zoom lever toward to zoom out this reduces the zoom factor.
      Images become coarser the more they are digitally zoomed.

Shooting with the Digital Tele-Converter

When either [1.6x] or [2.0x] is used the Digital Tele-Converter is enabled. Please see screen below for more information:

  • The appears on the LCD monitor when these settings are used.
  • Depending on the number of recording pixels set, image quality may deteriorate (and the zoom factor appear in blue).
The digital tele-converter feature uses digital zoom to achieve the effects of a tele-converter (a lens used for telephoto shooting).
