Scanning Film (8800F)

Scan 35 mm film strips (negative/positive) or mounted slides (positive). MP Navigator EX is compatible with film strips (standard state of developed film, with six frames in each strip) and mounted slides (one frame per mounted slide). Up to 12 frames for film strips and 4 frames for mounted slides can be scanned continuously.

  1. On the Windows desktop, double-click (MP Navigator EX 1.0).
    Alternatively, on the Windows taskbar, click Start, point to (All) Programs, Canon Utilities, then MP Navigator EX 1.0. Then click MP Navigator EX 1.0.

    The MP Navigator EX one-click mode screen or navigation mode screen opens.

    You can complete from scanning to saving, etc. at one time by clicking the corresponding icon on the one-click mode screen. You can scan film from the one-click mode screen as well, by setting the document type to film. See the section below for details.

    Navigation Mode Screen


    When the one-click mode screen has opened, click the (Switch Mode) button to switch to the navigation mode screen.

    Note: If the Show this window at startup checkbox is not selected, the last used screen opens.

  2. Point to Scan/Import and click Film.

  3. Place film on the platen.
    For details on how to place the film, see the Quick Start Guide.

  4. Click Specify... and set the preferences as required.
    The Scan Settings Dialog Box opens. Specify the Film Type and Scanning Resolution.

    Important: Film may not be scanned correctly when Film Type in the Scan Settings dialog box is set to Auto. In that case, select the type of film in Film Type and scan again.

    Note: To scan black and white film, it is recommended that you select Black and White Negative Film or Black and White Positive Film for Film Type in the Scan Settings dialog box.

  5. Click Scan.

    When the data size is 100 MB or more, a warning message will be displayed after you click Scan.
    Click OK to start the preview scan.
    When preview scan of the film is completed, preview images will be displayed.


    Important: Preview will not be displayed when the Preview before scanning checkbox is not selected in the Scan Settings dialog box. The scanned images will be displayed directly in the Thumbnail List area.

    Check All Frames
    Selects all displayed images.

  6. Select the checkbox of the frame you want to scan, then click Scan.

    When scanning is completed, the Scan Complete dialog box opens. Select Scan or Exit.
    Select Scan to scan the next film, or select Exit to end.
    When scanning is completed, the scanned image appears in the Thumbnail List area.

  7. Edit the scanned image as required.

    When there are multiple images, first select images to edit. (Selected images are outlined in orange.)
    Use edit tools to rotate images, select a part of an image, etc.

    Note: Drag the mouse or use Shift + arrow keys to select multiple images. (Selected images are outlined in orange.)

  8. Click Save or Save as PDF file.

  9. Specify the following settings as required:

    When Save is selected:
    The Save dialog box opens. Specify the destination folder, file name and file type.


    Note: The default folder is MP Navigator EX in the Pictures folder (Windows Vista) or in the My Pictures folder (Windows XP and Windows 2000).

    When Save as PDF file is selected:
    The Save as PDF file dialog box opens. Specify the file type, file name and destination folder.


    Select from the following PDF file types:

    PDF When multiple images are selected, each image is saved as a separate PDF file.
    PDF(Multiple Pages) Multiple images are saved in one PDF file.
    PDF(Add Page) Selected images are added to a specified PDF file. The images are added to the end of the PDF file. You cannot rearrange pages of the PDF file to which images are added.

    Important: You can select only PDF files created with MP Navigator EX. You cannot select PDF files created with other applications. PDF files edited in other applications cannot be selected as well.

    Important: PDF(Multiple Pages) is displayed when multiple images are selected.

    Note: The default folder is MP Navigator EX in the Pictures folder (Windows Vista) or in the My Pictures folder (Windows XP and Windows 2000).

  10. Click Save.

    Scanned images are saved according to the settings.
    To further use/edit the scanned images on MP Navigator EX, click Open saved location in the Save Complete dialog box. The saved images appear in the View & Use screen.

Easy Scanning with One-click

You can complete from scanning to saving easily by simply clicking the corresponding icon.

  1. Place the document face-down on the platen.

  2. On the Windows desktop, double-click alt (MP Navigator EX 1.0).
    Alternatively, on the Windows taskbar, click Start, point to (All) Programs, Canon Utilities, then MP Navigator EX 1.0. Then click MP Navigator EX 1.0.

    The MP Navigator EX one-click mode screen or navigation mode screen opens.

  3. Point to One-click.


    Note: Omit this step if the one-click mode screen opened in Step 2

  4. Click the corresponding icon.

    Save
    Scan documents or photographs and save them to a computer.
    The Save dialog box opens when you click this button. Specify the scan/save settings and scan.

    Copy
    Scan and print documents.
    The Copy dialog box opens when you click this button. Specify the scan/print settings and scan.

    Print
    Scan documents and print them after specifying the paper, printing method, size, layout, etc. This is useful when you want to copy/enlarge printed photographs.
    The Print dialog box opens when you click this button. Specify the print settings and scan.

    Mail
    Scan documents or photographs and attach them to e-mail.
    The Mail dialog box opens when you click this button. Specify the scan/save settings and e-mail software program, and scan.

    OCR
    Scan text documents and open them in OmniPage SE by default.
    The OCR dialog box opens when you click this button. Specify the scan/save settings and scan.

    Photo-1/Photo-2
    Scan documents and open the scanned image in the assigned application. By default, ArcSoft PhotoStudio is assigned to Photo-1 and Photo-2.
    The Photo dialog box opens when you click this button. Specify the scan/save settings and application, and scan.

    PDF
    Scan documents, save them as PDF files and start the specified application.
    The PDF dialog box opens when you click this button. Specify the scan/save settings and scan.

    Important: If an application is not assigned, scanned image is saved to your computer.

Scanning Film from ScanGear Advanced Mode

  1. Place the film on the platen, then start ScanGear.
    For details on how to place the film, see the Quick Start Guide.
  2. Click the Advanced Mode tab.
  3. Set Select Source, Film Size and Color Mode.
    1. Select from Color Negative Film, Color Positive Film, Monochrome Negative Film and Monochrome Positive Film.
    2. Select from 35mm Strip, 35mm Slide and 120 Format.
      Note: If thumbnail view is enabled, then the film size is detected automatically during preview and therefore it is not possible to manually select the film size. To manually select the film size, turn off thumbnail view by clicking the button at the top left of the ScanGear window.
    3. Select a color mode according to the document type and purpose.

    Color Select this to scan color film. The image is expressed in 256 levels (8 bit) of R(ed), G(reen), and B(lue).
    Color(48bit) Select this to scan color film. The image is expressed in 65536 levels (16 bit) of R(ed), G(reen), and B(lue).
    Grayscale Select this to scan black and white film. The image is expressed in 256 levels (8 bit) of black and white.
    Grayscale(16bit) Select this to scan black and white film. The image is expressed in 65536 levels (16 bit) of black and white.

    Important
    Some applications cannot display images scanned in Color(48bit)and Grayscale(16bit).
    Color(48bit) and Grayscale(16bit) is displayed only when the Enable 48/16 bit Output checkbox is selected in the Scan tab of the Preferences dialog box in the Advanced Mode tab.

  4. Click Preview and check the images.

    Preview image appears in the preview area. Image is cropped (scan area is specified) automatically according to the film size. Select the frames to scan.

  5. Set Output Settings.

    Select from 50 dpi, 75 dpi, 100 dpi, 150 dpi, 200 dpi, 300 dpi, 400 dpi, 600 dpi, 800 dpi, 1200 dpi, 1600 dpi, 2400 dpi, 3200 dpi, 4800 dpi, 6400 dpi, 9600 dpi.
    Alternatively, type a value in the 25-19200 dpi range (in 1 dpi increments).

    Output Size
    Select Flexible to set custom size or select a size for printing or displaying.

  1. Adjust the cropping frame, correct images and adjust colors as required.

    Image Settings items and Color Adjustment buttons:

    Image Settings Apply the following functions: Auto Tone, Unsharp Mask, Remove Dust and Scratches, Fading Correction, Grain Correction, Backlight Correction and Exposure/Tone Settings.
    Color Adjustment Buttons Adjust the image's overall brightness, color tone, contrast, etc.

  2. Click Scan.

    Scanning starts.
    When scanning is completed, a dialog box prompting you to select the next action opens. Follow the prompt to complete.
