How to set and use bounce flash

Solution

For bouncing light off a ceiling the 299T's flash head can be tilted upwards up to 90° with click-stops at 0°, 60°, 75° and 90° . For bouncing light off a wall, it can be swung 180° to the left with click-stops at 0°, 60°, 75°, 90°, 120°, 150° and 180° and can be swung 90° to the right with click-stops at 0°, 60°, 75° and 90°. To swing the flash horizontally, first slide the horizontal direction bounce latch upwards and then rotate the flash head left or right.
  • When swinging the flash upward, be sure to set the flash head exactly at the various click-stop position
  • When bouncing the flash, the actual shooting distance is the total of the flash to reflecting surface distance and the subject to reflecting surface distance. When using bounce flash in manual modes, therefore it is necessary to adjust the aperture calculated by the guide number formula, taking the actual shooting distance and the loss of light into consideration. (If you calculate the aperture using the distance noted on the distance scale on the lens the picture will be underexposed). The adjustment also depends on the color and reflectivity of the reflecting surface, so it is best to bracket you exposures or take trial shots in advance
