Learn what to do when your printer displays support or error code 1688.

Solution

The reason for the error code

One or more ink tanks is empty. You'll see the lamp on the ink tank flashing.

Actions you can take

Replace the ink tank and close the ink cover. Refer to Replacing an Ink Tank.

or

For each ink cartridge or tank identified by the printer as being empty, disable the function that detects the level of ink remaining in the ink cartridge or tank.

In all PIXMA models other than G-series PIXMA models, you can disable the ink detection system with the empty ink cartridges or tanks installed by pressing the Stop button on the printer for at least five (5) seconds and then releasing it.  In G-series PIXMA models, you can do so by pressing and then immediately releasing the StartOK, or Resume button, or by following the instructions on the printer’s LCD screen.[1]

By performing that operation, you can continue to scan without ink in the cartridge or tank as long as all cartridges or tanks (even if empty) remain installed in the printer.

Note: Printing with an empty ink tank empty may damage the printer, and we're not liable malfunctions or damage caused by printing with an empty ink tank. However, if you want to continue printing in this condition, you can press and hold the machine's Stop button for at least 5 seconds. The printer will no longer detect remaining ink levels.

If the function for detecting the level of ink remaining in an ink cartridge or tank is disabled, the ink cartridge or tank will be displayed in white on the touch screen (if the printer has a touch screen) when you check the estimated remaining ink level.
If, due to individual usage factors, there is some residual amount of ink in the cartridge(s) or tank(s) and you continue to print or copy, image quality may be diminished.
