Scanning Films with the Scanner Buttons

This method of scanning is a simple and convenient way to print or load images into photo album programs, all with a single push of a button. With this method, you can scan without adjusting settings each time.


Printing with the [COPY] Button
This button is programmed to send the scanned image to a printer.
You can scan 35 mm film strips and slides with it.

Saving Images to the Album Program with the [SCAN] Button
This button is programmed to save the scanned image to the ArcSoft PhotoBase album program.
You can scan 35 mm film strips and slides with it.

* To use the CanoScan Toolbox Copy function, the scanner and printer should be connected to the computer, all powered on, and the drivers should be installed properly and functioning. See the printer's instruction manual for printing preparation procedures.
* You cannot scan films with the [FILE] and [E-MAIL] buttons.
* The scanner buttons are designed to work with CanoScan Toolbox. After you change a CanoScan Toolbox setting, that setting is used to scan the next time a scanner button is pressed.
* To scan 120 and 4" x 5" format films, open ScanGear CS from within an application program and scan in the Advanced Mode.

Printing with the [COPY] Button

Prepare the printer for printing.

The scanner and printer should be connected to the computer, all powered on, and the drivers should be installed properly and functioning. See your printer's instruction manual for the print preparation procedures.

Remove the protective sheet from the document cover of the scanner.
Slide the protective sheet upwards to remove the top notch, slide the sheet upwards further to remove the bottom notch.


Set the film(s) in the film guide, and position the film guide on the document glass of the scanner.

* To scan 120 and 4" x 5" format films, open ScanGear CS from within an application program and scan in the Advanced Mode.

Press the [COPY] button on the scanner.
The scanner will start automatically and scan the entire film (all frames) on the document glass.
All of the scanned frames will print out on the printer when the scan is complete.
* According to the default settings, the printer will print one frame per sheet of paper.


After you have finished scanning film, put the protective sheet back on the document cover of the scanner.
Fit the holes at the bottom end of the protective sheet over the posts at the bottom of the document cover and slide the protective sheet down. Repeat the procedure at the top end, aligning the mark on the top right of the protective sheet with the mark on the top right of the document cover.
* Always replace the protective sheet when you are not scanning film to prevent the film adapter unit from getting scratched.

Saving Images to the Album Program with the [SCAN] Button


Remove the protective sheet from the document cover of the scanner.
Slide the protective sheet upwards to remove the top notch, slide the sheet upwards further to remove the bottom notch.


Set the film in the film guide and position the film guide on the document glass of the scanner.

* To scan 120 and 4" x 5" format films, open ScanGear CS from within an application program and scan in the Advanced Mode.


Press the [SCAN] button.
The scanner will start automatically and scan the entire film (all frames) on the document glass.
All of the scanned frames will open in ArcSoft PhotoBase when the scan is complete.


* The scanned image may be added to the sample album the first time you use the ArcSoft PhotoBase album program. To have scanned images saved in your own album, create one in advance.


Save the album.


After you have finished scanning film, put the protective sheet back on the document cover of the scanner.
Fit the holes at the bottom end of the protective sheet over the posts at the bottom of the document cover and slide the protective sheet down. Repeat the procedure at the top end, aligning the mark on the top right of the protective sheet with the mark on the top right of the document cover.
* Always replace the protective sheet when you are not scanning film to prevent the film adapter unit from getting scratched.

Scanning Films with CanoScan Toolbox

You can scan 35 mm film strips and slides using the Copy, Save, Scan-1 and Scan-2 buttons in CanoScan Toolbox. The procedures are similar for each button.


Remove the protective sheet from the document cover of the scanner.
Slide the protective sheet upwards to remove the top notch, slide the sheet upwards further to remove the bottom notch.


Set the film(s) in the film guide, and position the film guide on the document glass of the scanner.

* To scan 120 and 4" x 5" format films, open ScanGear CS from within an application program and scan in the Advanced Mode.


Start CanoScan Toolbox.


Click a button on the CanoScan Toolbox main window to open the settings window for that button.

* You cannot scan film with the Mail, OCR or File buttons.


Select a [Select source] option.

Film You can select the Scan mode and Image quality settings in this mode.
Auto mode All frames are scanned with an Output Resolution of 200 dpi. With the Copy function, the image is enlarged and printed at photo size (8.9 x 12.7 cm/3.5 x 5.0 in.) in landscape orientation.
Skip to Step 8 if you selected the Auto mode.


Set the [Scan mode] if you selected Film in the Select source category.

Scan all frames Scans all the frames it detects. Up to 24 frames can be scanned.
Display thumbnails Displays all the frames it detects as thumbnail images. You can remove the check marks from unwanted frames, so that only the required frames are included in the final scan.
Index scan Scans all the frames it detects and displays them in an index image.


Set the [Image quality] if you selected Film in the Select source category.

Standard (200 dpi) A resolution suited for viewing images on websites or printing at the photo size (8.9 x 12.7 cm/3.5 x 5.0 in.).
Good (400 dpi) A resolution suited for making high-quality color prints up to the photo size (8.9 x 12.7 cm/3.5 x 5.0 in.) or postcard size.
Enlarged printing (800 dpi) A resolution suited for enlarging images up to A4 (Letter) size, or for printing on a high-performance color printer.
* The Image quality is automatically set to Standard (200 dpi) when the Scan mode is set to Index scan.


Click the [Scan] button.
If you selected the Scan all frames option, all frames will automatically be scanned.
If you selected Display thumbnails, the image thumbnails will display.
If you selected Index scan, all frames on the document glass will be scanned and displayed in an index image.


If you selected Display thumbnails, place a check mark beside the frames you wish to scan, and click the [Next] button.
The selected images will be scanned, loaded into the application and saved.


After you have finished scanning film, put the protective sheet back on the document cover of the scanner.
Fit the holes at the bottom end of the protective sheet over the posts at the bottom of the document cover and slide the protective sheet down. Repeat the procedure at the top end, aligning the mark on the top right of the protective sheet with the mark on the top right of the document cover.
* Always replace the protective sheet when you are not scanning film to prevent the film adapter unit from getting scratched.
* If you select [Film] in the Select source category and scan once, and then use the Copy or Scan scanner button to scan the next time, the same settings will be used to scan the next item. Be particularly careful when you use the scanner buttons and switch to a paper/photo item. You are recommended to switch back to the [Auto mode] and click the [Apply] button when you will not be continuing to scan items of the same type with the same settings.

Scanning Films with ScanGear CS in Simple Mode

To scan 35 mm film strips and slides into an application program, you can start ScanGear CS from within the program.
In the Simple Mode, there are only a few simple procedures.


Remove the protective sheet from the document cover of the scanner.
Slide the protective sheet upwards to remove the top notch, slide the sheet upwards further to remove the bottom notch.

Set the film(s) in the film guide, and position the film guide on the document glass of the scanner.

* To scan 120 and 4" x 5" format films, open ScanGear CS from within an application program and scan in the Advanced Mode.


Start ScanGear CS from within the application program.


If ScanGear CS is in the Advanced Mode, click the [Simple Mode] button on the bottom right of the window to display the Simple Mode tab.


Set the [Select source] category to [Film].


Set the [Type of original].
Negative Select this to scan negatives.
Positive Select this to scan positives.


Click the [Preview] button.
Thumbnails of the frames will display.
* If the thumbnails do not display correctly, adjust the position of the film in the film guide and click the [Preview] button again.


Place a check mark beside the frames you wish to scan and click the [Scan] button.
The frames with check marks will be scanned and sent to the application program as 200 dpi, photo size (8.9 x 12.7 cm/3.5 x 5.0 in.) images.


After you have finished scanning film, put the protective sheet back on the document cover of the scanner.
Fit the holes at the bottom end of the protective sheet over the posts at the bottom of the document cover and slide the protective sheet down. Repeat the procedure at the top end, aligning the mark on the top right of the protective sheet with the mark on the top right of the document cover.

Scanning Films with ScanGear CS in Advanced Mode

To scan 35 mm film strips and slides, 120 and 4" x 5" format films into an application program, you can start ScanGear CS from within the program.
In the Advanced Mode, you can change the resolution and use various functions to scan, including color correction, filters, and a dust and scratch removal function.


Remove the protective sheet from the document cover of the scanner.
Slide the protective sheet upwards to remove the top notch, slide the sheet upwards further to remove the bottom notch.

Set the film(s) in the film guide, and position the film guide on the document glass of the scanner.

Start ScanGear CS from within the application program.

If ScanGear CS is in the Simple Mode, click the [Advanced Mode] button on the bottom right of the window to display the Advanced Mode tab.

Set the [Select source] category corresponding to the film.

Set the [Color Mode] category corresponding to the film.


Click the [Preview] button.
Thumbnails of the frames will display.
* If the thumbnails do not display correctly, adjust the position of the film in the film guide and click the [Preview] button again.


Place a check mark beside the number(s) of the frame(s) you wish to scan.

* When you scan films with 13 or more frames, click the tab on the right to view the 13th and subsequent frames.
* At first, a check mark only appears beside the first frame. You can scan multiple frames in one step if you place check marks beside the numbers of each frame you wish to include.


Set the [Output Resolution] and [Scale] to a value that is appropriate for the image's ultimate use.

The initial settings for scanning film are 800 dpi for Output Resolution and 100% for Scale. You are recommended to select the following resolutions and scale for the respective uses of the image.
35 mm Films
For viewing on a computer screen or attaching to an e-mail message: 100 dpi, 400%.
For printing at photo sizes (8.9 x 12.7 cm/3.5 x 5.0 in.): 400 dpi, 400%.
* A warning message will display if you set the Output Resolution too high. If you proceed anyway, it may take an extremely long time to scan and yield a very large image file.

Set the other categories as required.


Click the [Scan] button.
The selected frames will be scanned, loaded into the application and saved.
