When an error has occurs, the error or message is displayed on the LCD. Take the appropriate action to clear the message. For error messages while faxing, click here.

How to correct

Ink has run out. Replace the ink tank and close the cover.
U041

When canceling printing, press the <Stop/Reset> button.
To continue printing, press the <OK> button.
After printing is completed, replace the ink tank with a new one as soon as possible.
The machine may get damaged if the ink tank is not replaced and printing is continued.

Note: If multiple ink tank lamps are flashing red, check how fast they flash. Fast flashing (at about one second interval) indicates the ink is empty. Slow flashing (at about three second interval) indicates ink is low.

The following ink tank cannot be recognized.
U140
U043

The ink tank may not be installed properly (The lamp on the ink tank is off). Install the appropriate ink tank.

The installed ink tank is not compatible with this printer.
Install the appropriate ink tank.

The following ink tank cannot be recognized.
U150
Ink tank errors have occurred (The lamp on the ink tank is off).
Replace the ink tank.

The ink tank that is not supported by this machine is installed (The lamp on the ink tank is off).
Install the appropriate ink tank.

More than one ink tank of the following color is installed.
U071

More than one ink tank is installed in an incorrect slot.
Refer to the color guide label on the print head lever to install them in the correct slot.

The remaining level of the following ink cannot be correctly detected.
U130

An ink tank that was once used or was refilled may be installed.
Replace the ink tank.

Although it is possible to continue printing by pressing the <Stop/Reset> button for at least five seconds, this operation will disable ink detection and the printer will not be able to detect the remaining ink level.
Please note that problems caused by ink refill are not covered under the printer's warranty.

Some ink tanks are not installed in place.
U072

Some ink tanks are not installed correctly.
Make sure a click is heard when installing the ink tanks.

Document in ADF. Redo operation after checking document on ADF and pressing [OK]. The document is jammed in the ADF. Remove the document page jammed in the ADF, then press <OK>. When the error is cleared, redo the operation.

This paper is not compatible with duplex printing.

The following papers are compatible with duplex printing: A4 / Letter / A5 / B5 / 5" x 7".
Press the <OK> button to eject the printed paper and resume printing from the front side of the next sheet.
Please note that the data which is supposed to be printed on the back side of the paper will not be printed if this error occurs.

Auto head align has failed.

Automatic print head alignment failed.
Press the <OK> button to clear the error.
Check the following list and repeat the automatic print head alignment procedure.

- Check if letter or A4-sized paper is loaded in the auto sheet feeder.
- Check if the paper output slot is not exposed to a strong light source.
- Print a nozzle check pattern to confirm the print head nozzles are not clogged. Click here to clean the print head nozzles.
- The Paper Output Slot has been exposed to a strong light source preventing current Print Head alignment. Press <OK> to resolve the error. Align the Print Head so the Paper Output Slot is not exposed to direct light source.

If the problem continues, perform manual print head alignment.

Document size is too long. Redo operation after checking document on ADF and pressing [OK]. The document is too long or is jammed in the ADF. Remove the document page jammed in the ADF, then press <OK>. When the error is cleared, make sure that the document you are loading meets the machine's requirements before redoing the operation.
Photo scan error. The photographs cannot be scanned.
Confirm that each photograph is at least 10 mm (0.4 inch) away from each other and scan them again.
Release the scanner lock switch and turn the power off and back on. Turn off the machine, open the document cover, and then release the scanner lock switch.
Document size not suitable for two-sided scanning. Press [OK] to cancel operation and discharge document. Two-sided scanning can be used only with Letter- or A4-sized documents.
Press <OK> to discharge the document, and rescan the document one side at a time.

Incompatible device detected.

Communication with the connected camera is not possible.
Disconnect the cable from the camera and check the following items and try printing again.

1) Check if the camera is compatible with PictBridge or Canon Bubble Jet Direct.
If the camera is not PictBridge or Canon Bubble Jet Direct compatible, Camera Direct Printing is not possible.
2) Depending on the model or brand of your camera, you may have to select a print mode compliant with PictBridge before connecting the camera.
Perform necessary operations according to the instruction manual supplied with your camera.
3) A specified period of time may have elapsed without receiving a response from the digital camera.
Disconnect and reconnect the cable from the camera to refresh hardware detection.

The waste ink absorber is almost full. Press [OK] to continue but early replacement recommended.

Press the <OK> button to clear the error.
You can continue printing; however, when the waste ink absorber becomes full,printing will no longer be possible

Waste ink absorber is a part inside the printer, which absorbs ink used in the cleaning operations, etc.

Print head is not installed./The type of print head is incorrect.

If the print head is not installed, install it and then perform the print head alignment.
If the print head is already installed, remove the print head and reinstall it.
 

The card is currently write-enabled.

Since the memory card is currently write-enabled, printing is not possible.
Set the memory card to read-only mode.

There are no photos in memory card.

Images stored in the memory card may be not supported by the printer.
To print images that are not supported by the printer, print the images from a computer.
- Photo data edited/processed from a computer
- Image with a file format other than JPEG or TIFF
- Images with a file name which includes double-byte characters.
- Images stored in the fourth or higher layer folder (sub-folder)

There is no paper.

If paper is not set, set paper and press the <OK> button. When paper is installed, check each item try printing again.

1. Check if recommended paper is loaded.
2. Verify paper is loaded properly and in the correct paper source.
3. If printing from a computer, check the feeding method in the MP driver is set correctly.
4. Check if recommended paper is used and the number of sheets does not exceed the paper loading limits.
5. Clean the paper feed roller to resolve this error.

 

The paper is jammed.

Clear the jam.
Paper is likely to jam in the following instances.

1. Confirm there is no foreign material in the paper feed areas.
2. Verify recommended paper is loaded.
3. Verify paper is loaded properly and in the correct paper source.
4. Check if recommended paper is used and the number of sheets does not exceed the paper loading limits.

 

Scanner is not operating correctly. Turn OFF the machine then disconnect the power cord from the electrical source. Wait a while, power on the machine and try copying, faxing or scanning again. 
Failed to scan The document cannot be scanned.
Confirm that the document is placed properly on the platen glass and scan it again.

Inner Cover is open. Close the inner cover and press [OK].

Close the inner cover and press the <OK> button.
Do not open or close the Inner Cover while printing. This may damage the machine.

1. Turn off the machine.
2. Unplug the power cord from the power source.
3. Wait about ten minutes, plug the power cord back in and power on the machine.

This coded dial cannot be used.
Coded dial *##

(Where '##' represents a coded dial number 00 ~ 99)

You dialed a coded speed dialing number in which a group is registered either with Hook pressed or with the handset lifted.
A coded speed dialing number in which a group is registered cannot be dialed this way.
Hang up the handset and press another coded speed dial number.
This one-touch speed dial cannot be used. One-touch ##

(Where '##' represents a One-touch number 01 ~ 08)

You dialed a one-touch speed dialing number in which a group is registered either with [Hook] pressed or with the handset lifted.
A one-touch speed dialing number in which a group is registered cannot be dialed this way.
Hang up the handset and press another One-touch number.
Auto redial The machine is waiting to redial the recipient's number because the line was busy or the recipient did not answer when you tried to send a fax. Wait for the machine to automatically redial the number. If you want to cancel automatic redialing, wait until the machine starts dialing the number, press <Stop/Reset>, then follow the instructions on the display.
You can also delete the document from memory.
Hang up the phone. The handset is not placed in the handset cradle correctly. Replace the handset correctly.
Try again in black & white. The recipient's fax machine is not color-compatible. Press <Black> to resend the faxes. Alternatively, you can set Color TX to Send in black & white.
Failed to connect. The telephone line cable with a modular plug is not plugged in properly, or Dial tone detect is set to [ON]. Make sure that the cable is plugged in properly, and resend the fax after a while. If you still cannot send the fax, set Dial tone detect to [OFF].
Received in memory. The machine was not able to print the received fax and the fax is stored in memory for the following reasons:
- Paper has run out or is jammed
- Paper size setting is incorrect
- Ink has run out
Correct the issue and press <OK> or <Stop/Reset> to clear the error.
Busy/no signal The telephone number you dialed is busy.
Try dialing again after waiting for a moment.

The fax number dialed was incorrect.
Check the fax number and dial again.

The recipient's fax machine is not working.
Contact the recipient and have them check their fax machine.

The recipient is not using a G3 machine.
Contact the recipient and ask them to send or receive the document using a G3 machine.

The touch tone/rotary pulse setting on your machine is incorrect.
Set your machine to the setting that matches your telephone line.

The receiving fax machine did not answer within 55 seconds (after all automatic redialing attempts).
Contact the recipient and have them check their fax machine. For an overseas call, add pauses to the registered number.

Memory is full.

The machine's memory is full because it has received too many documents, or a very long or detailed document.
Contact the sender and have him/her divide and resend them.

Click here to print or delete documents from memory.

The paper size is not correct.
Change the page size you have set.

The paper size setting is set to a size other than <A4>, <8.5" x 11" (215 x 279)>, or <8.5" x 14" (215 x 355)>.

Reset the paper size in the Settings screen. When feeding from the Auto Sheet Feeder, set it to <A4>, <8.5" x 11" (215 x 279)>, or <8.5" x 14" (215 x 355)>. When feeding from the cassette, set it to <A4> or <8.5" x 11" (215 x 279)>.
