Troubleshooting the USB connection (PowerShot G3, S230, S45)

Solution

My computer is unable to detect the camera connected through USB

If everything is working correctly, you should see a response on your computer when you connect your camera through the USB cable, or when you turn your camera on, if it was already connected but turned off.

If this is the first time you've connected your camera, Windows should automatically begin a search for the appropriate USB driver and proceed to install it. (For more information on this, select the document "How do I install the USB driver for Windows?")

If your USB driver is already installed, when connecting the camera you should see either the event dialog box (allowing you to choose which application to open) or the program which you normally use to upload images from your camera, such as ZoomBrowser EX.

If nothing happens when you connect your camera, check the following items to determine why there is no communication.

  1. Check your PC. Make sure that your PC has a USB port, and that the operating system is pre-installed Windows 98, Windows 98 SE, Windows Me, Windows 2000, or Windows XP. (If your operating system has been upgraded from an earlier version of Windows, the USB communications may not function properly.)
  2. Check the connection between the camera and the PC. Make sure the USB cable is properly connected at ends. (Refer to the Camera User Guide which came with your camera.) If the camera is connected through a hub, try connecting the camera directly to the computer. You can also try disconnecting other USB devices (except keyboards or mice), then reconnect the camera.
  3. Check the camera. Make sure that your camera is ready for communication with your PC. Set the Main Dial (lower dial) to the Replay mode (blue arrowhead).
  4. Check the battery level. If the camera is running on batteries, make sure the batteries have enough power left. When you connect the camera to your PC for operations, we recommend that you use an AC adapter.
  5. If everything is correct to this point, Uninstall and Reinstall the USB Driver. Refer to the section entitled "Troubleshooting the USB Driver Installation" in the Software Starter Guide.

If you have lost your Camera User Guide (hardware manual) or Software Starter Guide, they are available for viewing or for download at http://www.powershot.com/powershot2/customer/manual.html.
