Sending from the fax machine using a long distance calling code.

Sending Using a Long Distance Calling Code

The telephone company or PBX system may use long distance calling codes on a phone line as a means to manage long distance calls. This service may extend to a fax phone line and for local phone calls as well.

To use a calling code for faxing, enter a pause (or pauses, as necessary) in the dialing sequence to allow time for the phone system to distinguish between the phone number and the calling code. For example, if the calling code has to be entered after the phone number, press <Redial/Pause> after the long distance number and then enter the calling code.

Here is an example of a couple of variations that may be used by the phone company / PBX system. (For details on time sequence between the long distance number and when you must enter the calling code, please contact your phone company or telecommunications specialist.)

Long distance number: 212.555.1212

Calling code: 123456

Scenario One:

12125551212p123456

Scenario Two:

123456p12125551212

Note:

  1. The above scenarios include a pause (p) in between the dialing sequence. This pause may be necessary to allow the phone system to detect each set of dialing sequences. The pause length can be adjusted from one to nine seconds, the default is two seconds.
  2. Prior to programming the entire dialing sequence in the fax machine's speed dial (One-touch or Coded speed dial), it is recommended to test it to confirm if a pause (or how long of a pause) is necessary.

Tips to help you send a fax using a calling code.

  1. To send a fax using a calling code, it may be necessary to add a pause(s) before the next string of dialing digits. The above example shows how a calling code is used to dial a long distance fax number. To provide time before the calling code number is dialed and avoid misdialing, a pause should be added.

    Example: 12125551212p123456

The number of pauses will depend on the phone / PBX system.

It is suggested to confirm if the time before the next set of digits is dialed will always be constant. This way you can always use the same number of pauses for that dialing sequence. If needed, you can also change the pause [MID PAUSE SET] length from its default 2 seconds.

  2. If you use One-touch or Coded Speed dialing to send faxes, you can program the entire dialing string in each speed dial or program parts of the dialing sequence into specific speed dials. Programming parts of the dialing sequence is more reliable than trying to determine how many pauses to include in the dialing string. Review these suggestions to assist you in sending a successful fax using a calling code.

    1. Program the long distance code on to a speed dial.
    2. Program the fax number on to another speed dial or you can enter the fax number manually.
    3. After all numbers have been programmed as speed dials and you are ready to send a fax, press the <FAX> button on the operator panel.
    4. Insert the documents face-up on the ADF.

    5. Press <Hook> and confirm you hear a dial tone.
    6. Press the appropriate speed dial for the fax destination number.

Note: If you did not program the fax destination as a speed dial, manually dial the number using the dial keypad.
    7. When you are prompted to enter your long distance calling code, press the appropriate speed dial or dial the number on the numeric keypad.
    8. Whe you hear the remote fax machine's high-pitched receive tones, press <Start>. When the transaction is complete, the fax machine will return to standby mode.

  3. If you prefer not to program your calling code number or any of the dialing strings, you may enter them manually for each single transaction.
    1. Press the <FAX> button on the operator panel.
    2. Insert the documents face-up on the ADF.

    3. Press <Hook> and confirm you hear a dial tone.
    4. Dial the fax destination number on the fax machine.
    5. When you are prompted to enter your long distance calling code, dial the number on the numeric keypad.
    6. When you hear the remote fax machine's high-pitched receive tones, press <Start>.
    7. When the transaction is complete, the fax machine will return to standby mode.
