Description
Solution
Cannot Print Properly through Infrared Communication |
The following are possible trouble that may occur when printing through infrared communication.
Cause
Action
Printer placement is inadequate.
When printing through infrared communication, confirm that the infrared ports on the printer and the computer, mobile phone or PDA are placed face to face with each other at a proper angle and distance, and that there is nothing blocking them. Then, retry printing.
Operational distance and angle vary depending on the specifications of your computer, mobile phone or PDA and your operating environment, but generally place the printer within around 8 inches / 20 cm from the computer, mobile phone or PDA in a position that enables proper communication.
During infrared communication, infrared rays were interrupted.
During receiving data, be careful not to interrupt infrared communication with the printer. If it is interrupted, send the data from the computer, mobile phone or PDAs again.
The conditions to print properly through the infrared communication are not met.
The infrared communication function of the printer is only compatible with computers, mobile phones or PDAs with IrDA compliant infrared communication ports. Printing through infrared communication cannot be performed by any other types of computers, mobile phones or PDAs.
For details, see Printing through Wireless Communication.
The required driver is not installed.
Check whether the driver meeting the following requirements is installed.
Windows 2000 or later must be pre installed and Microsoft Infrared Communication Driver must be installed in the computer.
For details on Microsoft Infrared Communication Driver, refer to your computer's operation manual.
For details on the requirements for infrared communication, see Printing from a Computer through Wireless Communication.
The infrared communication driver is inactive.
Check whether the infrared communication driver is active.
(1) Move the IrDA port of the printer close to the IrDA port of the computer, and make sure that (Infrared icon) is displayed on the task tray.
(2) Place the cursor on the (Infrared icon).
If "XXX is in range" (where "XXX" is your printer's name) is displayed, the printer is ready for printing.
The printer port setting is wrong.
When printing from the computer through infrared communication, check whether IR is selected for Print to the following port(s). If another port is selected, the printer may malfunction.
(1) Log on as a user account with administrator privilege.
(2) Click Control Panel, then Printer under Hardware and Sound.
In Windows XP, click Control Panel, Printers and Other Hardware, then Printers and Faxes.
In Windows 2000, click Control Panel then Printers.
(3) Right-click the Canon XXX icon (where "XXX" is your printer's name), then select Properties.
(4) Click the Ports tab and make sure that IR is selected for Print to the following port(s).
Printing through Wireless Communication
Printing from a Wireless Communication Device |
If you have a mobile phone or PDA with an IrDA port for wireless data transmission, you can print photos, E-mails, address book entries, notes, and schedules through wireless connection with the printer. If the optional Bluetooth Unit BU-30 is connected to the printer, you can also perform wireless printing from Bluetooth compatible mobile phones or PDAs.

Printing from a Computer through Wireless Communication |
If you have a computer with an IrDA port for wireless data transmission, you can print data through a wireless connection with the printer. If the optional Bluetooth Unit BU-30 is connected to the printer, you can also perform wireless printing from Bluetooth compatible computers.
For procedures to print from the computer through Bluetooth communication, refer to the Bluetooth Guide on-screen manual.

Performing Infrared Communication
When printing through infrared communication from your computer, also refer to your computer's instruction manual.
1 Prepare for printing.
(1) Turn on the printer.
If you use the battery, make sure that it is charged.
(2) Load paper.
2 Start Infrared Communication.
(1) Place the computer so that its infrared port (A) comes face to face to that of the printer (B) at a distance of less than approximately 8 inches / 20 cm (C).
Note
The effective angle of the IrDA Port of the printer is about 10 degrees up, down, left, or right from the central axis (D).
The effective range of communication with the printer depends on the computer you are using. For details, refer to your computer's instruction manual.
(2) Start printing from your computer.
Note
Do not place any obstacle between the infrared ports of the printer and computer, as it will block data transmission. Check the orientation and positions of the infrared ports of the printer and computer and oppose these ports properly.
Before printing or using a maintenance function of the printer driver, make sure that (Infrared icon) is displayed on the task tray. When the icon is displayed, the infrared communication is enabled.
During receiving data, be careful not to interrupt infrared communication with the printer. If it is interrupted, turn off the printer and delete print jobs from the print queue list. For how to delete the print jobs, follow the procedure below:
1. Open the printer properties dialog box.
2. Click the Maintenance tab and then View Printer Status.
3. Click Display Print Queue.
4. Select Cancel All Documents on the Printer menu.
You may not be able to select this depending on the privileges of the account.
5. When the confirmation message is displayed, click Yes.
The print jobs are deleted.
