Alarm Light Flashes on a PIXMA MG2420 / MG2500 Series

Description

Understand and resolve the flashing orange or green alarm lights on a PIXMA MG2420 or MG2500 Series printer.

Solution

When an error occurs you will see flashing lights on your printer panel. Depending on the error, a support code (error number) and a message may also display on your computer screen.

The light(s) on your printer panel may flash as follows:

  • Repeatedly orange: If so, count the number of flashes and refer to Table 1 below.

  • Alternately between green and orange: If so, count the number of flashes and refer to Table 2 below.

The printer is out of paper.

Reload the paper in the rear tray and press the Black or Color button to resume printing.

The cover is opened while printing is in progress.
  1. If paper is left inside the machine, remove the paper slowly with both hands and close the cover.

  2. Press the machine's Black or Color button to clear the error.

    • The machine ejects the blank paper and resumes printing from the next paper

    • The machine won't reprint the page that jammed. You will need to try printing again. 
      Caution Keep the cover closed while printing is in progress. Opening it can damage the machine.

Clear the paper jam, then reload the paper properly. Press the Black or Color button to print.

4 flashes 1687 Is the ink cartridge installed properly?
  1. Open the cover, push the ink cartridge completely up, then confirm that the cartridge is properly installed.

  2. Close the cover.

If the problem isn't resolved, remove, then reinstall the cartridges.

5 flashes 1401
1403
1485

The ink cartridge isn't installed. 

The ink cartridge isn't installed correctly.

The wrong ink cartridge is installed.

Make sure the appropriate cartridge is properly installed.

8 flashes   The ink absorber is almost full.

Press the machine's Black or Color button to continue printing. Service will be required soon.

9 flashes 1890 The protective material for the ink cartridge or the tape remains attached.

Check the inside of the machine. If protective material or the tape remains attached, remove it.

13 flashes 1686 The ink may have run out.
  • The function for detecting the remaining ink level will be disabled since the ink level can't be detected.

  • To continue printing without this function, press the machine's Stop button for at least 5 seconds.

  • Canon recommends to use new genuine Canon cartridges in order to obtain optimum qualities.

  • Please be advised that Canon shall not be liable for any malfunction or trouble caused by continuation of printing under the ink out condition.

14 flashes 1684 The ink cartridge can't be recognized.
  • Printing can't begin because the ink cartridge isn't properly installed or isn't compatible with this printer.

  • Install the appropriate ink cartridge.

  • If you want to cancel printing, press the machine's Stop button.

15 flashes 1682 The ink cartridge can't be recognized.

Replace the ink cartridge.

If the error isn't resolved, the cartridge may be damaged.

16 flashes 1688 The ink has run out.

Replace the ink cartridge and close the cover.

  • If printing is in progress and you want to continue printing, press the machine's Stop button for at least 5 seconds with the ink cartridge installed. Printing resumes under the ink out condition.

  • The function for detecting the remaining ink level is disabled.

  • Replace the empty ink cartridge immediately after printing.

Cancel printing and turn off the printer.

Clear the paper jam or protective material blocking the cartridge holder, and turn the printer back ON.

Be careful not to touch the components inside the machine. The machine may not print out properly if you touch it.

10 flashes B200, B201 An error requires that you contact the service center.

You may be able to recover from this error by replacing the ink cartridges.
