Printer Suddenly Becomes Unusable - MX490 / MX492

Description

This article provides a list of some things to check if the printer suddenly becomes unusuable.

 

Solution



Items 1 to 6 listed below may be the reasons why the printer suddenly becomes unusable.
 
  1. The devices are not turned on.
     
  2. The printer is located far away from the wireless router.
     
  3. The printer is not set as the default printer.
     
  4. The PC to use the printer is not connected to the network.
     
  5. MP driver settings are wrong.
     
  6. The wireless router has been changed or its settings altered.

 

Perform the following checks:



 

Check 1:
The devices may not be turned on.
Confirm that the wireless router is turned on. If it is, turn off the printer and the wireless router, and then turn them back on and restart.
If the problem is not solved, proceed to the next step.

Check 2:
The printer may be too far away from the wireless router.
Move the printer closer to the wireless router and try printing again to see if results improve.
If there is no improvement, perform printer setup again, and reconnect the printer to the wireless router.

Check 3:
The printer may not be set as a default printer.
In [ Printers and Faxes ], [ Devices and Printers ], or [ Printers ] under [ Control Panel ], confirm that the printer is check-marked.
If not, select the printer icon, right-click, and select [ Set as default printer]. If the problem still persists, proceed to the next step.

Check 4:
The PC to use the printer may not be connected to the network.
To see if the PC is connected to the network, check if an Internet page can be browsed on the PC.
If an Internet page cannot be browsed from the PC, move the PC closer to the wireless router and connect it to the network.
If the problem persists, proceed to the next step.

- Notes on connecting to the network:
For information regarding your wireless router's setup method and functionality, refer to its instruction manual or contact its manufacturer.
For PC settings, refer to the PC manual or contact its manufacturer.

Check 5:
MP driver may not be set properly.
Access http://canon.com/ijsetup/ and reinstall the MP Drivers.

 

Re-installation procedures are as follows:

 

Step1
When the following screen is shown, click [ Add Software ].

 

Step2
For Windows, select [ MP Drivers ] and click [ Next ], then follow the instructions.
For Mac OS X, select [ MP Drivers ] and [ Canon IJ Network Tool ] and click [ Next ], then follow the instructions.



NOTE
If you have a version of macOS newer than 10.13 installed on your computer, follow these steps to install the drivers and the IJ Network Tool.
  1. Click here to go to the support page for your printer.
     
  2. Under the Drivers tab, click the Select buttons to the right of the CUPS printer driver and the ICA driver.


     
  3. Click Download for each of the drivers.
     
  4. Click the Software tab.
     
  5. Click the Select button to the right of the IJ Network Tool.


     
  6. When each file has opened, a window will appear with a package (.pkg) file.  Double click on the package files to run the installers for the drivers and the IJ Network Tool.
     
  7. Follow any on-screen instructions to complete the installations.

The next steps to take will depend on if your printer is currently connected to your wireless network or not.



If the printer is connected to your wireless network:
  1. Click the Apple menu and go into System Preferences.
     
  2. Click Print & Fax / Print & Scan / Printers & Scanners (the name will depend on which version of macOS you are running).
     
  3. Click the + towards the lower left.


     
  4. The Add window will appear.  After a few moments, a listing for your printer will appear.  The Kind will be Canon IJ Network.



    Click this listing.
     
  5. After clicking this listing, make sure that the name of the printer shows for Use:.  Then, click Add.


The printer is ready for use with your Mac.



If the printer is not connected to your wireless network:

The printer will need to be connected to the wireless network.  This can be done in a few different ways:
  1. WPS Push Button
     
  2. WPS PIN Code
    This will require entry of the printer's WPS PIN code into your router's internal settings.  Please refer to your router's documentation for instructions
     
  3. Using the IJ Network Tool (macOS)
    This method requires a USB cable.
     
  4. Using Canon PRINT Inkjet / SELPHY from a mobile device (iOS or Android)
     
  5. Standard Setup
    This will allow you to manually connect the printer to your wireless router by using the printer's operation panel

 

Once the printer has been connected to your wireless network, add it to the printer list on the computer.
