Description

To scan when your printer has detected that one or more of your ink cartridges or ink tanks is empty, you must either (1) replace each ink cartridge or tank that the printer has detected is empty and close the printer’s cover, or (2) disable the function that detects the level of ink remaining in each such ink cartridge or tank.

Solution

Scan With an Empty Ink Cartridge or Ink Tank

If you want to scan when your printer has detected that one or more of your ink cartridges or ink tanks is empty, you must take one of the following steps concerning each such ink cartridge or tank.

  1. Replace each ink cartridge or tank identified by the printer as being empty and close the printer’s cover;

    or

  2. For each ink cartridge or tank identified by the printer as being empty, disable the function that detects the level of ink remaining in the ink cartridge or tank.

In all PIXMA models other than G-series PIXMA models, you can disable the ink detection system with the empty ink cartridges or tanks installed by pressing the Stop button on the printer for at least five (5) seconds and then releasing it.  In G-series PIXMA models, you can do so by pressing and then immediately releasing the Start, OK, or Resume button, or by following the instructions on the printer’s LCD screen.[1]

By performing that operation, you can continue to scan without ink in the cartridge or tank as long as all cartridges or tanks (even if empty) remain installed in the printer.

Notes:

If the function for detecting the level of ink remaining in an ink cartridge or tank is disabled, the ink cartridge or tank will be displayed in white on the touch screen (if the printer has a touch screen) when you check the estimated remaining ink level.
If, due to individual usage factors, there is some residual amount of ink in the cartridge(s) or tank(s) and you continue to print or copy, image quality may be diminished.

[1] If you disable the ink detection system when an ink cartridge or tank is identified as being empty, and subsequently another ink cartridge or tank in your printer is identified as being empty, you will need to follow the same process to disable the ink detection system for that cartridge or tank. Once your printer has detected that all ink cartridges or tanks are empty, and you have disabled the ink detection system for each one, the ink detection system will remain disabled, and you will not need to disable it again each time you use the scanning function.
