Canon’s optical design teams spent a considerable time using powerful computer aided simulation tools to explore the possibilities in reconciling very high 4K specifications with a variety of novel design strategies that would collectively contribute to a unique Canon Personality in the new cine zoom lenses. That extensive exploration examined all aspects of lens image quality parameters and image aberrations and distortions in a prolonged search for an aggregate performance that would speak to the urgings of those with whom we had consulted.

Macro Lens Macro lenses let us get much closer to a subject than a macro setting on a zoom lens. The optics in macro lenses are also designed to give superb results when shooting close-up pictures.

The challenge of tightly controlling lens MTF is further elevated in zoom lenses – because it is also an optical reality that MTF changes over the focal range of the zoom lens. And again, the optical designers must mobilize further innovative optical design strategies to minimize these changes. The demands on 4K lens design are higher than that of HDTV lenses – because of the anticipated very high bar in image resolution expectations.
