Description

Learn how to install or replace a FINE ink cartridge on your PIXMA MX490 or MX492.

Solution

Follow the steps below to replace the ink cartridge.

  1. Turn the printer ON.

  2. Open the front cover (A). The paper output tray (B) opens.

  3. Remove any paper in the cassette.

  1. Open the paper output cover. The ink cartridge holder (C) moves to the replacement position near the center.

 Caution

  • Wait for the ink cartridge holder to stop. Don't try to move it forcibly.

  • The inside of the machine may be stained with ink. Be careful not to stain your hands or clothes. You can wipe off any ink inside the machine with a clean, dry cloth.

  • Don't  touch the metallic parts or other parts inside the machine.

  • If the paper output cover is left open for more than 10 minutes, the ink cartridge holder may move and the alarm lamp will flash. In this case, close then reopen the paper output cover.

  1. Push down on the empty ink cartridge until it clicks (see slide images below).

You will hear an electronic sound twice. (When you set the alarm on silent mode in the user setting section called Sound control of Dev., the alarm won't beep.)

  1. Remove the ink cartridge.

Handle the ink cartridge carefully. Follow your local laws and regulations when you dispose of the empty ink cartridges and packing material.

  1. Take a new ink cartridge out of its package and  gently remove the protective tape (D).

 Caution

  • If you shake an ink cartridge, ink may spill out and stain your hands or your work area.

  • Don't reattach the protective tape after you remove it. Follow your local laws and regulations when you dispose of the tape.

  • Don't touch the electrical contacts of print head nozzle and on the ink cartridge. The machine may not print properly if you touch them.

  1. Insert the new ink cartridge at a slant into the ink cartridge holder.

The color ink cartridge goes on the left and the black ink cartridge goes on the right.

  1. Gently insert the ink cartridge so it doesn't hit the electrical contacts on the ink cartridge holder.

  1. Push the ink cartridge firmly in and up until it snaps into place. You will hear an electronic sound twice. (When you set the alarm on silent mode in the user setting section called Sound control of Dev., the alarm won't beep.)

Check to make sure the ink cartridge is correctly installed. The machine can\t print unless both the color and black ink cartridge are installed.

  1. Close the paper output cover.

Notes on ink cartridges

Don't  touch the electrical contacts (A) or print head nozzle (B) on an ink cartridge. The machine may not print properly if you touch them.

  • If you remove a cartridge, replace it immediately. Leave both ink cartridges in the printer, even if one of them is empty.

  • Use a new cartridge. A used cartridge may cause the nozzles to clog and you won't be notified when it's time for a replacement.

  • Don't leave a new cartridge out in the open after the packaging is removed. This causes the cartridge to dry out, and the machine may not operate properly when the cartridge is installed.

  • To maintain optimal print quality, use the cartridge within six months of the first use.

  • Color ink may be consumed even when printing a black-and-white document or when black-and-white printing is specified.

Good to know

  • If a support code appears after the paper output cover is closed, take appropriate action.

  • When you start a print task after ink tanks are replaced, the machine automatically cleans the print head. Do not perform any other operations until the machine completes the task.

  • If the print head is out of alignment, as indicated by misaligned printed ruled lines or similar symptoms, align the print head.

  • The machine may make noise during print head cleaning or alignment. This is nothing to worry about.
