How to set Flash Exposure Lock (FEL) on the flash on the EOS 1Ds

Solution

FE (flash exposure) lock obtains and locks the correct flash exposure reading for any part of the scene.

Check that the Speedlite's pilot lamp is lit.
  • The flash mode can be either normal or high-speed sync. FE lock works with either mode.

Focus the subject.

  • Focus at the point where you want to lock the flash exposure.

Aim the spot metering circle over the part where you want to lock the flash exposure, then press the <FEL> button (16 sec. ).

  • The Speedlite fires a preflash and stores the required flash output in memory.
  • In the viewfinder, the AF point achieving FE lock flashes in red.
  • Below the viewfinder, the display shown by 1 appears for 0.5 sec. followed by the display shown by 2.

Compose and shot and take the picture

If the subject is too far away, resulting in underexposure, the <> icon will blink. In such a case, increase the ISO speed or get closer to the subject and repeat steps 3 and 4.
