Delete some recordings or initialize the VIXIA HG20 or HG21's hard disk drive

If the VIXIA HG20 or HG21's hard drive or SD memory card becomes full the camcorder will not respond when the Start/Stop button is pressed. Delete some recordings to free up disc space or initialize (format) the hard disc or card to erase all recordings on the camcorder.

Be sure to copy any important recordings onto a computer or video recorder before deleting them or initializing the hard drive or memory card.

To initialize the hard disc or memory card please follow the below procedure.

Initializing erases all movies on the hard disk, allowing you free up space for more recordings. In addition, it reduces hard disk fragmentation, which may reduce performance and occurs as movies are recorded and deleted over time.

If the camcorders hard disk is initialized using a computer the camcorder will be unable to record and may display the [USE THE CAMCORDER TO INITIALIZE THE HARD DISK] message until the hard disk is initialized again by using the camcorders initialization procedure detailed below.

To initialize the hard disk or memory card follow the procedure detailed below.

*Press <SET> to cancel the complete initialization while it is in progress. All recordings will be erased and the recording media can be used without any problem.

Initializing the media may be done in one of two methods detailed below.

Quick Initialization

Clears the file allocation table but does not physically erase the stored data.

Complete Initialization

Erases all data completely. The complete initialization of the hard disk requires a longer time (HG20 approx 1 hr., HG21 approx. 2 hrs.)

  • Initializing the recording media will permanently erase all recordings. The lost original recordings cannot be recovered. Make sure you back up important recordings in advance using an external device.
  • Power the camcorder using the compact power adapter to initialize the hard disk. While the initialization is in progress, do not disconnect the power source.
  • Do not use your computer to initialize the camcorder's hard disk. Doing so will result in the camcorder ceasing to function properly.
