The camcorder offers two basic modes for recording video or photos: EASY mode for beginners or if you just prefer not to er with detailed camcorder settings, and Flexible Recording mode which lets you change the camcorder's settings to your preference.

Press the EASY button to enter the EASY mode (the buttons blue light will be on). You do not need to worry about any settings and can shoot video using just the zoom lever and Start/Stop or take photos using just the zoom lever and the Photo button. The viewfinder (HG21 only) and Quick Start function can also be used in EASY mode.

Press the EASY button again to return to the flexible recording mode (the buttons light will be off). You will now be able to access the menus and change settings to your preference.
