How Shutter Priority (Tv) mode works on the EOS 5D Mk II

Solution

In this mode, you set the shutter speed and the camera automatically sets the aperture value to suit the brightness of the subject. This is called Shutter-Priority AE.

A fast shutter speed can freeze the motion of a fast-moving subject and a slow shutter speed can blur the subject to give the impression of motion.

Tv stands for "time value."

1. Set the Mode Dial to <Tv>.
2. Select the desired shutter speed.
  • Look at the LCD panel and turn the <> dial to set the desired shutter speed.
  • It can be set in 1/3-stop increments.
- 3. Focus on the subject.
  • Press the shutter button down halfway.
  • The aperture value is determined automatically.

4. Check the viewfinder display and shoot.

  • As long as the aperture value is not blinking, the exposure will be correct.
  • If the maximum aperture blinks, it indicates underexposure. Turn the <> dial to set a slower shutter speed until the blinking stops. Or increase the ISO speed.
  • If the minimum aperture blinks, it indicates overexposure. Turn the <> dial to set a faster shutter speed until the blinking stops. Or decrease the ISO speed.
Shutter Speed Display

The shutter speeds from "8000" to "4" indicate the denominator of the fractional shutter speed. For example, "" indicates 1/125 sec. Also, "" indicates 0.5 sec, and "" indicates 15 sec.
