Solution

Shooting Problem Subjects for the Autofocus

The following focusing methods can only be used in the Creative Shooting Modes (P, Av, Tv and M) with the exception of Focus Lock.

The autofocus may not work well on the following types of subjects:

  • Subjects with extremely low contrast to the surroundings
  • Subjects mixing close and far objects
  • Subjects with extremely bright objects at the center of the composition
  • Subjects that are moving quickly
  • Subjects with horizontal stripes

To shoot these subjects, first aim the camera at an object at a similar distance, lock the focus (Focus Lock) or autofocus (AF Lock) and recompose the image with the desired subject. You can also use Manual Focus or Manual Focus in Combination with the Auto Focus.

Focus Lock

  1. Aim the camera so that an object at the same focal distance as the main subject is centered in the viewfinder or in the AF frame displayed on the LCD monitor.
  2. Press the shutter button halfway to lock the focus.
  3. Keep it pressed while you recompose the image and press the shutter button all the way to shoot the image.

AF Lock

1. Press the <DISPLAY> button to turn the LCD monitor on.

2. Aim the AF frame at an object at a similar distance to the subject you wish to shoot.

3. Press the shutter button halfway to lock the focus. Keep it pressed and press the <MF> button.

- The MF icon and MF indicator display allowing you to confirm the distance to the subject.

4 Re-aim the camera to compose the shot as desired and shoot.
- To release the AF Lock: Press the MF button.

Whe [Servo AF] is set to [On], AF lock cannot be used.

  • The AF lock cannot be used in the mode. However, if you register the AF lock in [Set Shortcut button] you can use the AF lock in the mode.
  • or mode does not display the AF frame.
  • When shooting with the focus lock or AF lock using the LCD monitor, setting the [AF Frame] to [Center] makes shooting easier since the camera focuses using the center AF frame only.
  • The AF lock function is convenient because you can let go of the shutter button to recompose the image. Moreover, the focus remains locked after the picture is taken, allowing you to capture a second image with the same focus.
  • When shooting through glass, get as close as possible to avoid reflection off the glass.

Shooting in the Manual Focus Mode

The focus can be manually set.

1. Turn on the LCD monitor.

2. Press the MF button to display MF.

  • The icon appears on the LCD monitor.

  • When the menu's [MF-Point Zoom] is set to [On], the portion of the image in the AF frame will appear magnified*. When the AF mode is set to [Continuous], turning the Control Wheel wil display the portion magnified. The magnified position will differ depending on the AF Frame Mode setting.

  • When set to [Face Detect], [AiAF], or [Center], the center of the LCD monitor is magnified.

  • When set to [FlexiZone], the location of the AF frame displayed immediately prior to setting the manual focus will display magnified.
    * When using , digital zoom, Digital Tele-Converter or while displaying the image on a TV, the display magnification is not available.
    * Can also be set so that the image displayed is not magnified.

  • Depending on the shooting mode, pressing the button will switch between the setting items as follows:

    SCN

    SCN mode / Exposure Compensation* / MF

    mode / Exposure Shift / MF

    P

    Exposure Compensation / MF

    Tv

    Shutter Speed / Exposure Compensation / MF

    Av

    Aperture Value / Exposure Compensation / MF

    * Cannot be set in , , or mode.

3. Use the control dial and adjust the focus.

- The MF indicator shows approximate figures. Use them as a shooting guideline only.

4. Recompose the image and press the shutter button all the way to shoot the image.

- To cancel the Manual Focus press the MF button.

Using the Manual Focus in Combination with the Auto Focus

First, manual focus is used to roughly focus, the from that focus position the camera automatically focuses more accurately. You can use two methods.

Setting by the

1. Focus the camera with the manual focus, then press the button.
- The camera focuses to a more accurate focusing point.

Setting the Safety MF

1. In the menu select [Safety MF].

- Press the <MENU> button.

- Use the or button to select [Safety MF] in the menu.

2. Make the settings.

- Use the or button to select [On]

- Press the <MENU> button.

3. Focus the camera with the manual focus, then press the shutter button halfway.

  • The camera focuses to a more accurate focusing point.

4. To shoot, press the shutter button fully.

- The AF lock cannot be used in the mode.

You cannot change the AF frame setting while focusing manually. Cancel the manual focus mode, then change the AF frame setting.

  • You can use manual focus in the macro focal distance. In this case, the fine scale is adopted.

  • You can change the MF indicator displayed distance units.
