Changing the Fax Settings

This section describes the setting items in FAX user settings, Transmission settings, and Reception settings in the FAX settings menu.

  1. Make sure that the machine is turned on

  2. Press the <Setup> button.

  3. Use the button to select [Device settings], then press the <OK> button.
    The Device settings screen is displayed.

  4. Use the button to select [FAX settings], then press the <OK> button.


    The above example shows Print settings selected.

  5. Use the button to select a menu, then press the <OK> button.


    The setting screen for the selected item is displayed.


  6. Use the button to select a setting item, then press the OK button.

  • Before changing the settings, you can confirm the current settings by printing the User's Data List.

  • Auto print

    Sets whether the machine automatically prints the received fax. When this setting is set to OFF, received faxes are stored in memory.

    Note
    • When this setting is set to OFF, the following reports are also not printed automatically.

      Activity report
      TX (Transmission) report
      RX (Reception) report
      MULTI TX (Transmission) report

    • You can print the activity report manually even when OFF is selected for Auto print.
      To print the report other than the activity report, select ON for Auto print.

    • Print when out of ink:

      Sets whether to continue printing the received fax without storing it in memory when the ink has run out. When this setting is set to ON, the machine prints the received fax forcibly even if the ink has run out.

      However, part or all of the fax may not be printed since the ink has run out.

  • User information settings

    Registers your name and fax/telephone number printed on sent faxes


  • TTI position

    Selects the position of the sender information (outside or inside the image area). After selecting the position, select FAX or TEL to specify the mark to appear before the fax/telephone number printed on sent faxes.

  • Offhook alarm

    Enables/disables the alarm that alerts you if the handset of the telephone connected to the machine is not hung up properly.

  • Volume control

    RX ring volume: Selects the ring volume when the machine receives a fax.

    Line monitor volume: Selects the line monitor volume.

  • RX ring level

    Adjusts the level of the ringing sound the machine makes when it receives a fax. You can select either Standard or High.

  • Telephone line type

    Selects the telephone line type setting for the machine.

    Note
    • This setting may not be available depending on the country or region of purchase.

  • Activity report

    Sets whether to print the Activity report automatically after every 20 transactions.

Transmission settings

  • ECM TX

    This machine is set to send/receive faxes in Error Correction Mode (ECM) by default.

    When the recipient's fax machine is compatible with ECM, the machine resends the fax after correcting errors automatically. When the recipient's fax machine is not compatible with ECM, the fax will be sent/received without automatic error correction.

    ECM transmission can be disabled.

  • Pause time settings

    Sets the length of time paused for each press of the Redial/Pause button.

  • Auto redial

    Enables/disables automatic redialing.

    If you select ON, you can specify the maximum number of redial attempts and the length of time the machine waits between redial attempts.

  • TX start speed

    Selects the fax transmission speed.

    33600 bps is the maximum transmission speed. When the telephone line condition or connection is poor, selecting a lower transmission speed may solve transmission problems.

  • Color transmission

    When faxing color documents using the ADF, selects whether to convert them into black & white data if the recipient's fax machine does not support color faxing.

  • TX report

    Enables/disables automatic printing of a transmission report after a fax transmission.

    If you select Print error only or Print for each TX, you can enable/disable printing of the first page of the fax under the report.

  • Dial tone detect

    Avoids mistransmission when reception and transmission occur at the same time.

    If you select ON, the machine transmits the fax after confirming the dial tone.

    This setting may not be supported depending on the country or region of purchase.

  • Fax number re-entry

    If you select ON, you can set the machine to send faxes after using the Numeric buttons to dial the number twice. By using this setting, you can avoid the mistransmission of faxes.

  • Check RX fax information

    If you select ON, the machine checks whether the recipient's fax machine information matches the dialed number. If it matches the number, the machine starts to send faxes.

  • Hook key setting

    If you select Enable, you can use the Hook button.

Reception settings

  • ECM RX

    This machine is set to send/receive faxes in Error Correction Mode (ECM) by default.

    When the sender's fax machine is compatible with ECM, it resends the fax after correcting errors automatically. When the sender's fax machine is not compatible with ECM, the fax will be sent/received without automatic error correction.

    ECM reception can be disabled.

  • Fax priority mode

    Specifies the detailed settings when Receive mode settings is set to Fax priority mode.

    • Ring start time

      Specifies the length of time, in seconds, to allow the machine to judge whether an incoming call is a fax or a voice call.

    • Telephone ring time

      Specifies the length of time, in seconds, that the machine rings for a voice call.

    • Default action

      Sets whether to receive the fax after the specified ring time has elapsed.


  • DRPD: Fax ring pattern

    Sets the distinctive ring pattern of a call that the machine assumes is a fax call. If you subscribe to a DRPD service, set the ring pattern to match the pattern assigned by your telephone company.

    You can select the ring pattern from Normal ring, Double ring, Short-short-long, Short-long-short, and Other ring type.

    This setting is available only in the US and Canada.

  • Incoming ring

    MX870 series
    Selects whether to allow the external device to ring when the receive mode is set to Fax only mode or Fax priority mode.

    * The range of the number of times the external device rings differs depending on the country or region of purchase; from twice to 30 times, 10 times, or five times.

    If you select ON, you can specify the number of times the external device rings.


    MX350 series

    Specifies the number of times the external device rings when the receive mode is set to Fax only mode or Fax priority mode.

    * The range of the number of times the external device rings differs depending on the country or region of purchase; from twice to 30 times, 10 times, or five times.

  • Manual/auto switch

    Sets whether to automatically receive faxes after the external device rang a specified length of time when Receive mode settings is set to TEL priority mode.

    If you select ON, you can specify the length of time until automatic reception is started.

  • Remote RX

    Enables/disables remote reception.

    If you select ON, you can specify the remote reception ID.

  • RX image reduction

    Enables/disables automatic reduction of incoming faxes so that they fit in the selected paper.

    If you select ON, you can select the image reduction direction.

  • RX start speed

    Selects the fax reception speed.

    33600 bps is the maximum reception speed. When the telephone line condition or connection is poor, selecting a lower reception speed may solve reception problems.

  • RX report

    Sets whether to print a reception report after each reception.


  • Fax reception reject

    If you select ON, the machine rejects the reception of faxes with no sender information or faxes from specific senders.

    • No sender info.

      Rejects faxes with no caller identification.

    • 1-touch/code unset (MX870 series)/Coded dial unset (MX350 series)

      Rejects faxes from senders not registered to speed dial codes.

    • Rejected numbers

      Rejects faxes from senders registered in the machine as rejected numbers.

  • Caller rejection

    If you subscribe to the Caller ID service, the machine detects the sender's Caller ID. If the sender's ID does not match the conditions specified in this setting, the machine rejects the phone call or fax reception from the sender.

    If you select Yes, you can specify the following settings:

    • Anonymous no.

      Selects whether to reject a phone call or fax reception from an anonymous number.
    • Out of area no.

      Selects whether to reject a phone call or fax reception out of the subscribed service area.

    • Rejected no.

      Selects whether to reject a phone call or fax reception from the numbers registered to Rejected numbers in Fax reception reject. If you select Reject for this setting, Register rejected numbers? is displayed on the LCD. Select Yes to register a fax/telephone number to reject.
