Explanation of the High Internal Temperature Warning During Live View/Movie Shooting

Solution

Q1. Why does a thermometer icon sometimes appear on the LCD screen of my camera during Live View/Movie Shooting?

A1. The thermometer icon is a warning indicator that the temperature of the camera is high. Increases in the camera's temperature are generally caused by either or of the following two factors:

  1. Extended use of Live View and/or EOS Movie functions
  2. Use in relatively high ambient temperatures

The combination of extended usage of the Live View and/or EOS Movie functions and high ambient temperatures will cause the high temperature warning indicator to be displayed sooner than either of those factors individually.

Q2. Can I continue shooting after the high temperature warning indicator initially appears?

A2. Yes, you can continue shooting after the high temperature warning indicator appears. However, if you continue shooting in either Live View or EOS Movie mode after the high temperature warning indicator is initially displayed, if the camera's temperature rises to a certain point, the camera will automatically stop recording images. If this happens, you will not be able to shoot again until the camera's temperature decreases. Turn off the power and let the camera rest for a while.

Q3. Can my camera be damaged if I continue shooting while the high temperature warning indicator is displayed?

A3. No, the camera will not be damaged.

Q4. Is image quality degraded by shooting while the high temperature warning indicator is displayed?

A4. Continuing to shoot while the high temperature warning indicator is displayed will not have an effect on the image quality of movies, but the image quality of still images may be degraded. If shooting still images, we recommend that you stop shooting for a while.

Q5. How can I maximize the length of time that I can shoot in Live View mode and/or EOS Movie mode before the high temperature warning indicator is displayed?

A5. Please turn off the power frequently when not shooting. Also, we recommend not leaving the camera in high-temperature environments.
