Description

Procedure for setting the AF mode on the PowerShot A480 IS.

Solution

Switching between Autofocus Modes AiAF.

Although the autofocus function is preset to the AiAF setting (nine AF frames), you can set it to the center AF frame or to Face Detect. When the center AF frame is selected, the AF frame will appear in the LCD monitor. The AF frame does not appear when AiAF is selected.

Face Detect

You can have the camera automatically detect the position of a face and use this data to set the focus and exposure* while shooting. In addition, the camera will meter the subject so that the face is correctly illuminated when the flash fires. If a face is not detected, images will be shot using the [On] option.

* Only in evaluative metering mode

AiAF

The camera detects the subject and highlights the AF frames, from 9 available points, that it will use to determine the focus.

Center

The camera focuses using the center AF frame. This is convenient for focusing on a specific part of a subject with greater certainty.

The symbol represents the AF frames as they appear in the LCD monitor.

  1. Press the <MENU> button.
  2. In the (Rec.) menu, select [AF Frame].

  3. Use the or button to select [Face Detect], [AiAF] or [Center]. You can shoot right after selecting an option by pressing the shutter button.
  4. Press the <MENU> button again to return to the Rec. screen
  • Maximum of three frames will be displayed at the positions of the faces the camera recognizes. At this point, the frame the camera judges to be the main subject appears in white while the others appear in gray. When the shutter button is pressed halfway and the focus is achieved, up to 9 green AF frames may appear.
  • The camera will shoot using [AiAF] not the [Face Detect] function if a white frame fails to appear and only gray frames display, or if a face is not detected/
  • The camera may mistakenly identify non-human subjects as a face.
  • In certain cases, faces may not be detected.
    Examples:
-If faces appear extremely small or large, dark or bright, relative to the overall composition.
-Faces turned to the side or at a diagonal, or faces with a portion hidden.
