Solution

Forwarding Scanned Data to PC Using the Operation Panel of the Machine

You can forward scanned data to the PC using the Operation Panel of the machine.

Before forwarding scanned data to the PC, confirm the following:

  • The necessary application software (MP Drivers and MP Navigator EX) is installed.

    If the application software (MP Drivers and MP Navigator EX) is not yet installed, insert the Setup CD-ROM into the computer's disc drive, then perform Custom Install and select MP Drivers and MP Navigator EX.

  • The machine is connected to a computer correctly.

    Make sure that the machine is connected to the computer correctly.

    Do not plug in or unplug the USB cable when scanning images with the machine, or when the computer is in the sleep or standby mode.

    If you perform scanning via a network connection, make sure that all the required settings have been specified. For details, refer to Network Scan Settings.

  • The destination and the file name are specified in MP Navigator EX.

    You can specify the destination and the file name in MP Navigator EX. For details on how to perform settings or the initial settings, refer to Scanner Button Settings Tab (Save to PC).

  1. Make sure that the machine is turned on.

  2. Press the SCAN button.

    If you forward the data to the USB-connected computer:
    Press the Menu button to display the screen for selecting to which you save the data.

    If you forward the data to the network-connected computer:
    The screen for selecting to which you save the data is displayed.

    Note

    • If PC scan standby is displayed on the LCD after you press the SCAN button, press the Menu button to display the screen for selecting to which you save the data.

  3. Use the LEFTRIGHT button to select PC, then press the OK button.

  4. Use the LEFTRIGHT button to select the PC to forward the scanned data, then press the OK button.

    Note


    • If you select Local (USB) in the Select PC screen, the data is forwarded to the USB-connected computer.

  5. Use the LEFTRIGHT button to select the document type, then press the OK button.

    Auto scan

    This item is available only when the machine is connected to the computer using a USB cable.
    The machine detects the type of the originals automatically and the image is forwarded in the optimized size, resolution and data format.

    Important

    • Scanning via a network is not available.

    • Load originals properly according to their type; otherwise, some originals may not be scanned properly.

    • The following items can be scanned:
      Photos, postcards, visiting cards, magazines, newspapers, documents, CD/DVDs

    • The following items cannot be scanned properly.

      • A4 sized photos

      • Documents smaller than 5 inches x 7 inches (127 mm x 178 mm) such as a paperback with its backbone cut off

      • Originals on thin white paper

      • Long and narrow originals such as panoramic photographs

    • When you scan originals from the ADF, it may take longer to scan the first page.

    Document

    Scans the original on the Platen Glass or in the ADF applying the optimized settings for scanning a document.

  6. Press the Settings button to adjust the settings as necessary.

  7. Load the original document on the Platen Glass or in the ADF.

  8. Press the Color button for color scanning, or the Black button for black & white scanning.If you select the setting other than PDF for Data format or you loaded the original in the ADF:

    Scanning starts and the images are forwarded to the computer according to the settings specified in MP Navigator EX.

    If you select PDF for Data format:

    You can scan documents from the Platen Glass continuously. After scanning is complete, select Yes on the confirmation screen. Load the next document on the Platen Glass, then press the Color button for color scanning, or the Black button for black & white scanning. After scanning is complete, selecting No on the confirmation screen allows you to save the scanned documents in one PDF file.

    Remove the original on the Platen Glass or from the Document Output Slot after scanning is complete.

    Important


    • If the scanning result with Auto scan is not satisfactory, select Document or Photo according to the original in step 5, then specify the scan size or other setting items in step 6.
  • If you want to scan originals with advanced settings, or if you want to edit or print the scanned images:

    If you scan originals from a computer using MP Navigator EX, MP Navigator EX enables you to edit the scanned images, such as optimizing or trimming. In addition, you can edit or print the scanned images using the bundled application software to make better use of them.

Network Scan Settings

You can connect the machine to a network to share it among multiple computers or scan images into a specified computer.

Important
  • Multiple users cannot scan at the same time.

Note
  • Complete the network settings of the machine beforehand. (Refer to the printed manual: Getting Started.)

Complete the following settings to enable scanning over a network.

Specifying the Machine

Use Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector to specify the scanner you want to use. By specifying the scanner, you can scan over a network using your computer or the Operation Panel of the machine.

Important
  • If the product you want to use is changed with Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector, the product used for scanning with MP Navigator EX changes as well. The product for scanning using the Operation Panel also changes.

    If the machine is not selected in MP Navigator EX, check that it is selected with Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector.

  • To scan using the Operation Panel of the machine, specify the machine with Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector, then click (Enabled) in the menu bar and select Scan the images using the operation panel of the scanner.

  • The following setting is not required if the machine has already been specified during setup.

  1. Check that Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector is running.

    If Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector is running, its icon appears in the menu bar.

    Note


    • If the icon is not displayed in the menu bar, open the Library folder on the hard disk, then double-click Printers > Canon > IJScanner > Utilities > Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector2.

      The icon appears in the menu bar, and the Scan-from-PC Settings dialog opens. In that case, skip ahead to Step 3.

  2. In the menu bar, click the Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector icon and select Open Settings....

  3. Select the machine from Network Device List.

    Select the Bonjour service name set to the machine. Do Not Use is selected by default. When Bonjour is disabled, the MAC address of the machine is displayed.

    Important

    • If multiple scanners exist on the network, multiple names (MAC addresses) are displayed. In that case, you can select one scanner per model. For details, refer to the help file of Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector.

  4. Click OK.

Note
  • To make settings for scanning using the Operation Panel of the machine, click Scan-from-Operation-Panel Settings to open a dialog, then change the settings.

  • The scanners selected in the Scan-from-PC Settings dialog will be automatically selected in the Scan-from-Operation-Panel Settings dialog as well.



Setting for Scanning with MP Navigator EX

To scan over a network using MP Navigator EX, specify the machine with Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector, then follow the steps below and change the connection status between the computer and the machine.

  1. Start MP Navigator EX.

  2. Click Preferences.

  3. For network connection, select (model name) series (Network: XXXXXXXXXXXX) for Product Name.

    (Where XXXXXXXXXXXX is the Bonjour service name or MAC address.)

    The Bonjour service name set to the machine is displayed by default. When Bonjour is disabled, the MAC address of the machine is displayed.

    Note

    • For USB connection, select (model name) series for Product Name.

    • When you click Change..., the Scan-from-PC Settings dialog of Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector opens.

      If you have multiple scanners, you can select other scanners.

  4. Click OK.

    The Preferences dialog closes. You can now scan via a network connection.

    Go to the Main Menu to check whether network scanning is enabled.

Setting for Scanning Using the Operation Panel

You can make settings for scanning using the Operation Panel of the machine.

Important
  1. Check that Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector is running.

    If Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector is running, its icon appears in the menu bar.

    Note

    • If the icon is not displayed in the menu bar, open the Library folder on the hard disk, then double-click Printers > Canon > IJScanner > Utilities > Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector2.

      The icon appears in the menu bar, and the Scan-from-PC Settings dialog opens. In that case, skip ahead to Step 3.

  2. In the menu bar, click the Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector icon and select Open Settings....

  3. Check that the machine is selected in Network Device List, then click Scan-from-Operation-Panel Settings.

  4. Select the machine from Network Device List and click OK.

    The Bonjour service name set to the machine is selected by default. When Bonjour is disabled, the MAC address of the machine is displayed.

    Note

    • When multiple scanners are connected via a network, you can select up to three scanners (one per model). For details, refer to the help file of Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector.

  5. Return to the Scan-from-PC Settings dialog and click OK.

Note
  • If the Bonjour service name or MAC address of the machine is displayed in gray or not displayed, or cannot be selected, check the following conditions and click OK to close the dialog, then reopen it and select the scanner.

    - ScanGear (scanner driver) is installed

    - Network setup is completed after installing ScanGear

    - Network communication between the machine and computer is enabled

Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector Menu and Setting Screen

Set up Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector to scan images into a computer over a network using MP Navigator EX or the Operation Panel of the machine.

After installation, Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector appears in the menu bar.

  • Scan the images using the operation panel of the scanner

    Select whether to enable scanning over a network using the Operation Panel of the machine.

    When you click the icon in the menu bar and select Scan the images using the operation panel of the scanner, the icon becomes Enabled and a checkmark appears.

  • About Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector

    Displays information on Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector.

  • Open Settings...

    The Scan-from-PC Settings dialog opens. You can select the product you want to use.

The machine must be selected with Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector before scanning over a network.

In the menu bar, click the icon and select Open Settings... to open the Scan-from-PC Settings dialog.

  • Network Device List

    The Bonjour service names or MAC addresses of the scanners that can be used over the network are displayed.

    For details, refer to the help file of Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector.

    Important


    • If you have disabled Bonjour after selecting the machine by Bonjour service name, reopen the Scan-from-PC Settings dialog and select the MAC address of the machine from Network Device List.

    • If you have changed the Bonjour service name after selecting the machine by Bonjour service name, reopen the Scan-from-PC Settings dialog and select the new Bonjour service name from Network Device List.

  • (Help)

    Opens the help file of Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector.

  • Scan-from-Operation-Panel Settings

    The Scan-from-Operation-Panel Settings dialog opens. You can select the scanners from which you want to scan using the Operation Panel.

  • Network Device List

    The Bonjour service names or MAC addresses of the scanners that can be used over the network are displayed.

    You can select up to three scanners (one per model). For details, refer to the help file of Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector.

    Important

    • If you have disabled Bonjour after selecting the machine by Bonjour service name, reopen the Scan-from-PC Settings dialog and select the MAC address of the machine from Network Device List.

    • If you have changed the Bonjour service name after selecting the machine by Bonjour service name, reopen the Scan-from-PC Settings dialog and select the new Bonjour service name from Network Device List.

Note
  • If the Bonjour service name or MAC address of the machine is displayed in gray or not displayed, or cannot be selected, check the following conditions and click OK to close the dialog, then reopen it and select the scanner.

    - ScanGear (scanner driver) is installed

    - Network setup is completed after installing ScanGear

    - Network communication between the machine and computer is enabled

  • You do not need to use this software when scanning via USB. You can scan via USB even if Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector is running.

Scanner Button Settings Tab (Save to PC)

On the Scanner Button Settings tab, you can specify how to respond when scanning using the Operation Panel of the machine.

See "Setting Items on the Operation Panel of the Machine" for details on the items to be set using the Operation Panel of the machine.

Event

  • Select Event

    Save to PC is set.

  • Document Type

    Displays the document types that can be selected on the Operation Panel of the machine.

Actions

Scan Settings

  • Document Size

    Set this item using the Operation Panel of the machine.

  • Resolution

    Set this item using the Operation Panel of the machine.

  • Specify...

    Opens the Scan Settings dialog in which you can make advanced scan settings.

Save Settings

  • Automatically save the image to your computer after scanning it

    Select this to save the images to your computer as specified after scanning them.

    The File Name and Save in settings will be displayed.

    • File Name

      Enter the file name of the image to be saved (up to 64 characters).

    • Save as type

      Set this item using the Operation Panel of the machine.

    • Set...

      Opens the Auto Save Settings dialog in which you can specify the file format and other advanced save settings.

      Data Type for Auto Scan

      You can specify the file format in which to save images automatically when Auto Scan is selected on the Operation Panel of the machine. Select a file format for saving Document and Photo each.

      • When JPEG/Exif is Selected

        Click Set... to specify a compression type for JPEG files. Select High(Low Compression), Standard or Low(High Compression).

        Important

        • You cannot select a compression type for JPEG files when the Compress scanned images when transferring checkbox is selected on the "General Tab" of the Preferences dialog.

      • When PDF is Selected

        Click Set... to make advanced settings for creating PDF files.

      JPEG/Exif

      You can specify which compression type to use for JPEG files when JPEG/Exif is selected on the Operation Panel of the machine.

      Click Set... to open a dialog and select High(Low Compression), Standard or Low(High Compression).

      Important


      • This setting is not available when the Compress scanned images when transferring checkbox is selected on the "General Tab" of the Preferences dialog.

      PDF

      You can make advanced settings for creating PDF files when PDF is selected on the Operation Panel of the machine.

      Click Set... to open a dialog and specify the save settings for PDF files.

      Important

      • Use the Operation Panel of the machine to set the compression type for saving.

    • Save in

      Displays the folder in which to save the scanned images. To change the folder, click Browse... to specify another one.

      The default destination folder is MP Navigator EX in the Pictures folder.

    • Save to a Subfolder with Current Date

      Select this checkbox to create a subfolder in the folder specified in Save in with the current date and save scanned files in it. A subfolder with a name such as "2010_01_01" (Year_Month_Date) will be created.

      If this checkbox is not selected, files are saved directly in the folder specified in Save in.

  • Open the save dialog box after scanning the image

    Select this to open the save dialog after scanning the images and specify the save settings such as destination folder, file name and Exif information.

Setting Items on the Operation Panel of the Machine

You can change the scan settings such as the scan size, resolution, or data format.

In Scan mode, press the Settings button repeatedly to switch the item to set. Use the LEFTRIGHT button to select the item, then press the OK button to set.

Note
  • Some setting items are not available depending on the destination or the document type you selected.

  • The * (asterisk) on the LCD indicates the current setting.

  • The settings of the scan size, resolution, and data format are retained even if the machine is turned off.

  • When you forward the scanned data to the computer, you can specify the destination and file name using MP Navigator EX. For details, refer to Scanner Button Settings Tab (Save to PC).

  • If you scan originals from the computer, you can scan with advanced settings.

  • Scan size

    Select the size of the original on the Platen Glass or in the ADF.

    Ex:

    If you save the scanned data on the USB flash drive:

    A4/8.5"x11"/LTR/8.5"x14"/Legal

    If you forward the scanned data to the computer:

    Auto/Multi/8.5"x11"/LTR/8.5"x14"/Legal/A4/4"x6"/10x15/5"x7"/13x18

    If you select Auto, the machine detects the page size automatically and starts scanning.

    If you select Multi, you can scan several originals at a time.

    Note

    • Some of setting items are not available depending on the country or region of purchase.

    • 8.5"x14" or Legal can be selected only when Document type is set to Document and you forward the scanned data to the computer.

    • Multi can be selected only when Document type is set to Photo.

    • A4, 8.5"x11", LTR, 8.5"x14", or Legal can be selected when of the conditions below are satisfied.

      • Document type is set to Document.

      • You start scanning from the ADF.

    • When Auto crop or Multi crop is selected for scanning, load the original on the Platen Glass.

    • When the original to scan is Legal-sized, load it in the ADF.

  • Data format

    Select the data format of the scanned data.

    Ex:

    If you save the scanned data on the USB flash drive:

    PDF/JPEG/Compact PDF

    If you forward the scanned data to the computer:

    PDF/Compact PDF/JPEG/TIFF

    Note

    • PDF and Compact PDF can be selected when you forward the scanned data to the computer and Document type is set to Document.

  • Scan resolution

    Select the resolution for scanning.

    Ex:

    If you save the scanned data on the USB flash drive:

    150dpi/300dpi/600dpi

    If you forward the scanned data to the computer:

    75dpi/150dpi/300dpi/600dpi

    Note

    • When Compact PDF is selected for Data format, you cannot select the resolution.
