Scanning Documents
The following three scanning methods are available:
- Scanning Using the MF Toolbox
Scanning can be performed using the machine's available scanning software. You can fine-tune the scan settings based on your scan needs.
- Scanning an Image Using an Application
Scanning can be performed using your application. You can import scanned images directly into the application.
- Scanning with the WIA Driver
Scanning is performed using the driver system supplied with Windows operating systems. For details, see the "e-Manual" (HTML manual) in the CD-ROM supplied with the machine.
Before Using the Scan Function
To scan documents, perform the following steps.

Scanning with the MF Toolbox
1. Place your document.
note:
To scan from the platen glass
- You can scan a multiple-page document only when
- [Save as Type] is set to [PDF (Multiple Pages)].
- [Paper Size] in Step 6 is set to "fit the image."
2. Double-click the [Canon MF Toolbox 4.9] icon on the desktop.
The MF Toolbox starts.
3. Click one of the MF Toolbox command buttons based on your purpose of the scan.

The document is scanned and sent as an e-mail attachment from your e-mail application. |
| [OCR] |
The document is scanned and read by Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software. |
| [Save] |
The document will be scanned and saved. |
| [PDF] |
The document will be scanned and saved as a PDF file. |
[Color Scan]
[B&W Scan]
[Custom 1]
[Custom 2] |
The document is scanned and displayed in the registered application. A dialog box appears for each of the buttons. |
note:
Applications that can be registered as the MF Toolbox command buttons:
- The following applications can be registered as the MF Toolbox command buttons once they are installed on your computer. (The following applications may not be registered as the MF Toolbox command buttons after installation, if the MF Toolbox is installed beforehand.)
- [OCR]: Presto! PageManager
- [PDF]: Presto! PageManager
* These applications are supported on Windows XP 64-bit Edition.
4. Specify the scanner settings as needed.
Click [Apply] to save the settings.

5. Click [Start].
Scanning starts.
When the [Display the Scanner Driver] check box is selected in Step 4.
The [ScanGear MF] dialog box appears.
(1) Specify the settings as needed.

(2) Click [Scan].
Scanning starts.
Scanning an Image from an Application
You can scan an image from a TWAIN- or WIA- (Windows XP/Windows Vista/Windows 7 only) compliant application and use the image in that application. The procedure varies depending on the application. This section shows an example.
1. Place your document.
note:
When scanning from the platen glass
- Scanning multiple pages is not available when scanning from the platen glass.
2. Start the application to be used.
3. Select a scan command.
4. Select a scanner driver.
The ScanGear MF or WIA driver can be used on Windows XP/Windows Vista/Windows 7.
5. Specify the scanner settings as needed and click [Scan].
Scanning starts.
