Description

Learn how to set up your PIXMA MX420 with a Windows computer for use over a Wireless LAN via the Wi-Fi protected setup (WPS) method.

Solution

Follow the steps below to set up MX420 via the Wi-Fi® pretected setup (WPS) method.

  Make sure the computer is connected to the access point or router first before you setup the printer.

  • The configuration, router functions, setup procedures, and security settings of the network device vary based on your system. Refer to your device's instruction manual or contact its manufacturer for additional details.

  • The printer cannot be used over a wireless and wired connection at the same time.

  • An Ad-hoc connection, which establishes a direct connection to the computer over a wireless connection without an access point, is not supported. Be sure to prepare an access point.
     

 Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS)

  1. Press the Setup button (A) and use the left or right arrow buttons (B) to select Wireless LAN setup. Then, press the OK button.

  2. Use the up and down arrow buttons  (C) to select Yes, then press the OK button.

  3. When wireless connection is enabled, the Wi-Fi lamp (D) lights blue.

  1. Select Other setup, then press the OK button.

  2. Select WPS, then press the OK button.

  3. Select Push button method, then press the OK button.

 To use the PIN code method for setup:

  • Select PIN code method in step 6, then press the OK button. Follow the on-screen instructions to operate the printer and access point.

  • If the setup is not completed within 10 minutes and the timeout error screen appears, press the OK button to perform the setup again and set the new PIN code displayed on the screen to the access point.

  • If another error is displayed, refer to the Network Setup Troubleshooting manual.

  1. Press and hold the WPS button on the access point for about 5 seconds, then press the OK button on the printer within 2 minutes. Review the access point's  instruction manual for details on the WPS button location.

  2. The blue Wi-Fi lamp flashes while the printer searches and connects to an access point.

  3. Press the OK button.

If the timeout error screen appears, press the OK button, then start over from step 8. If an error message appears, refer to the Network Setup Troubleshooting manual.

 

Software installation.

 Software installation requires temporary use of a USB Cable Please don't plug the cable in now, we will do so at a later step.

  • The necessary software and driver installation process takes about 20 minutes. The installation time varies based on the computer environment or the number of applications to be installed.

  • Quit all applications before installation.

  • Log on as the administrator, or a member of the administrators group.

  • If the security software firewall is turned on, the 'Canon software is attempting to access the network' warning message may appear. Set the security software to always allow access.

  1. Turn on the computer, then insert the Setup CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. The setup program starts automatically.

    If the program does not start automatically, double-click the CD-ROM icon in Computer or My Computer, then doubleclick MSETUP4.EXE.

  2. For Windows 7 or Windows Vista, select Run Msetup4.exe on the AutoPlay screen, then choose Yes or Continue on the User Account Control dialog box.

  3. If the User Account Control dialog box reappears, select Yes or Continue.

  4. For Windows XP, select Easy Install. The drivers, application software, and on-screen manuals are installed.

    If you want to select particular items to install, select Custom Install.

  5. Select Install.

    Select install.

  6. Select Use the printer with wireless LAN connection, then choose Next. Follow any on-screen instructions to proceed with the software installation.

  7. When the Printer Detection screen appears, select Next.

  8. When the Detected Printers List dialog box appears, select Canon xxx series, then choose Next. Select Complete on the Setup Completion dialog box.

     The Check Printer Settings dialog box is displayed if the printer is not detected. Check the printer settings when this happens.

  9. Select Next. Follow any on-screen instructions to proceed with the software installation.

Select Next.

 The product serial number is required for product registration. The serial number is located inside the machine (as shown in the illustration).

  •  If the power is on, the FINE Cartridge holder will move when the Scanning Unit cover (A) is opened

  1. The Extended Survey Program screen appears. You can select Agree or Do not agree. Your choice has no effect on the printer's functionality.

  2. Select Exit to complete the installation.

    Select exit.

  3. Solution Menu EX starts.

     The buttons displayed on Solution Menu EX may vary depending on the country or region of purchase.

  4. Remove the Setup CD-ROM and keep it in a safe place.
