Learn how to manage the functions of the Canon IJ Printer Utility on your Mac.

Solution

Note If your printer model is on this list it doesn't use the IJ Print Utility. For these models, you will need to access the Remote UI (User Interface) to perform printer maintenance.

What the IJ Print Utility can do

With this utility, you can perform tasks from your Mac® such as:

  • Cleaning - to prevent print smudges and clear a clogged print head.

  • Test Print - to check the condition of the print head and adjust the print head position.

  • Power Settings - to monitor and modify the printer's power usage.

  • Ink Level Information - to check the remaining ink levels.

  • Ink Cartridge Settings - to select which cartridge to use.

  • Quiet Settings - to adjust the printer's operating noise.

  • Custom Settings - to change the printer's settings.

Launch the IJ Printer Utility

  1. Make sure your printer is turn ON.

  2. In the Apple® menu on your computer, select System Preferences.

  3. Depending on your version of Mac OS X®, select one of the following:

    • Print & Scan.

    • Printers & Scanners.

    • Print & Fax.

  4. Navigate to the printer utility for your operating system:

    • For OS 10.5.8: Select your printer from the list > Open Print Queue.... > Select Utility when a list of print jobs displays.

    • For OS 10.6 through 10.9: Select the Utility tab > Open Printer Utility.

    • For OS 10.10 through 10.15: Select your printer from the list, then select Options & Supplies.

  5. On the Utility tab select Open Printer Utility.

Additional steps (if you have an AirPrint driver)

Note If the Utility tab doesn't appear after you select Options & Supplies, you may use an AirPrint driver instead of a CUPS printer driver. In this case, you'll see Driver Version 2.0.

Driver Version: 2.0 displays on Printers & Scanners screen

If you use the CUPS printer driver, the version number will look similar to the one shown below:

Driver version: 16.10.0.0 displays on the Printers & Scanner screen

If you use an AirPrint driver with a model that has a CUPS printer driver, you need to download and install that driver for your computer.Go to Canon Support and enter the name of your printer in the search box.

  1. Select GoDrivers & Downloads.

  2. Towards the bottom of the page, select the CUPS printer driver for your printer. Download and install it.

  3. Then, click the minus sign (-) to remove the printer from the printers list.
