How to change the connection method from USB to wireless

 

The environment necessary for the wireless connection

 

Before connecting this printer to the network, confirm the following two items, (A) and (B).

 

 

(A) Access point or router (supporting IEEE802.11b/g/n)
An access point or router is a relay device which connects not only the Internet and network devices such as a computer or printer, but also one network device to another.

So, your access point or router must be properly set before you go to the next setup step.

 

(B) The computer to be used with the printer must be connected to the network.
In order to confirm whether the computer to be used with the printer is connected to the network, try to browse the Internet website from the computer.
CAUTION
- If you do not know how to set up the router / access point or the Internet, please refer to:
  • Regarding the setup method and the functions of the access point or the router, refer to the instruction manual for the access point or the router you are using, or contact each manufacturer.
  • Regarding the setup method of the computer, refer to the instruction manual for the computer you are using, or contact its manufacturer.
 

The procedures for the wireless connection

In order to use the printer in a wireless connection, follow the procedures below.
Even if the setup for the USB connection is complete, in order to use the wireless connection, follow the procedures below to perform the wireless setup.
 

 

1. Select the wireless setup method.
To use the printer in a wireless connection, select the wireless setup method you prefer.
 

 

2. Perform the wireless setting from the operation panel.
Perform the setting based on the setup method you selected in the step 1 using the operation panel.
 

 

3. Install the software.
Install the software into the computer used with the printer.
 

 

4. Perform the test printing.
Try wireless printing to confirm whether the wireless setup has been performed properly.
 

1. Select the wireless setup method.

To use the printer in the wireless connection, first select the wireless setup method.
 

 

- Easy Setup connection:
Perform the wireless setup manually.
In most cases, you can create a wireless environment using this setup method.
 

 

- WPS connection:
If the access point or the router you are using supports the WPS function, you can use this setup method to connect the printer in a wireless connection.
Confirm that the access point or the router you are using has the WPS button.

  • There is the WPS mark on the access point or the router you are using if it supports the WPS function.
 

 

2. Perform the wireless setting from the operation panel.

Perform the setup you selected in " 1. Select the wireless setup method." Using the operation panel of the printer. Follow the procedures below.
 

 

- Easy Setup connection:
When you select the Easy Setup connection method, follow the procedures below.
 

 

  • The information you need to have, in order to complete the wireless LAN setup manually.
In most cases, "Easy Setup" will be used to connect the machine to your access point or router.
Before you continue, you must gather the following information which will be required during the installation.
 

 

- Access Point Name/Network Name
* Also referred to as SSID.
An identifier to identify the specific access point.
 

 

- Network Key
* Also referred to as encryption key, WEP key or WPA/WPA2 passphrase, Pre-Shared key.
A password to prevent unauthorized access to the network.

 

Step 1.

 

(1) Press the Setup button (A).
 
(2) Use the or button (B) to select Wireless LAN setup.
 
(3) Press the OK button.
 

 

Step 2.

 

 

Use the or button (C) to select Yes, then press the OK button.

 

When wireless connection is enabled, the Wi-Fi lamp (D) lights blue.
 

 

Step 3.

 


 
Select Easy setup, then press the OK button.
 

 

Step 4.

 

 

Select the access point name you wrote down, then press the OK button.
REFERENCE
  • If you are living in an apartment, access points in use nearby may also be detected.
  • The access point names with 2-byte characters are not displayed properly, however, can be selected.
 

 

Step 5.

 


 
Make sure that one of the above screens is displayed, then press the OK button.
If the above screen is not displayed, go to 8.
 

 

Step 6.

 


 
Enter the network key you wrote down , then press the left FUNCTION button (E).
Press the center FUNCTION button (F) to switch character entry modes.
 
IMPORTANT
Network key entry is case-sensitive. Be sure to enter upper and lower case letters correctly.

This machine allows you to enter characters when an on-screen keyboard is displayed.

Follow the procedure below.

 

 

1. When an on-screen keyboard shown above is displayed, press the center FUNCTION button (F) to switch to a keyboard having characters you want to use.

 

  • Three character sets are available: Upper-case alphabets, lower-case alphabets, numbers and symbols. Each time you press the center FUNCTION button, an on-screen keyboard is switched among them.

 

2. Select a character on the on-screen keyboard using the buttons (G), then press the OK button to enter it.

  • Entered characters are displayed on the upper section (H) of the on-screen keyboard.

 

3. Repeat 1 and 2 to enter more characters.

 

4. After you enter all characters you need, press the left FUNCTION button (E).

* To insert a space, select Space on the on-screen keyboard and press the OK button.
* To insert characters, select the section (H) of the screen using the or button, move the cursor to the character on the right of the target position using the or button, then enter characters.
* To delete a character, select the section (H) of the screen using the or button, move the cursor to the target character using the or button, then press the right FUNCTION button (I).
 

 

Step 7.

 

 

Make sure that the network key is correct, then press the left FUNCTION button.
 

 

Step 8.

 

 

When the above screen appears, press the OK button.
REFERENCE
  • If Failed to connect to the access point. appears, press the OK button, make sure that the network key is correct, then enter it again. If a connection still cannot be established, refer to the printed manual: Network Setup Troubleshooting.

- WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) connection
When you select the WPS connection method, follow the procedures below.
 

 

Step 1.

 

 

(1) Press the Setup button (A).

 

(2) Use the or button (B) to select Wireless LAN setup.

 

(3) Press the OK button.
 

 

Step 2.

 

 

Use the or button (C) to select Yes, then press the OK button.
When wireless connection is enabled, the Wi-Fi lamp (D) lights blue.
 

 

Step 3.

 

 

Select Other setup, then press the OK button.
 

 

Step 4.

 

 

Select WPS, then press the OK button.
 

 

Step 5.

 

 

Select Push button method, then press the OK button.
 

 

Step 6.

 

 

Press the OK button.
 

 

- To use the PIN code method for setup

 

Select PIN code method in 5, then press the OK button. Follow the on-screen instructions to operate the machine and access point. When the screen in 8 appears, press the OK button.
REFERENCE
  • If the setup is not completed within 10 minutes and the timeout error screen appears, press the OK button to perform the setup again and set the new PIN code displayed on the screen to the access point. If another error is displayed, refer to the printed manual: Network Setup Troubleshooting.
 

 

Step 7.

 

 

Press and hold the WPS button on the access point (for about 5 seconds), then press the OK button on the machine within 2 minutes.

 

 

For details on the WPS button pressing, refer to the manual of your access point.
The Wi-Fi lamp (blue) on the machine flashes while searching for or connecting to an access point.
 

 

Step 8.

 

 

When the above screen appears, press the OK button.
IMPORTANT
  • If the timeout error screen appears, press the OK button, then start over from 7.
  • If another error appears, refer to the printed manual: Network Setup Troubleshooting.

How to change the connection method from USB to wireless (Software installation)

 

This is the second section of "How to change the connection method from USB to wireless" and we would like you to learn how to install software.

 

Make sure you have already established the wireless environment before moving on.

Otherwise, please go back to the first section

[ How to change the connection method from USB to wireless ].

 

3. Install the software

Install the software in the computer connected to the printer.

 

For Windows users: -> [Windows]
 
For Macintosh users: -> [Macintosh]
 

- Windows

 

When you are using a Windows computer, see the following procedures:

 
To perform the software installation, prepare the Setup CD-ROM prepackaged with the printer.
 

 

IMPORTANT
  • Quit all running applications before installation.
     
  • If the firewall function of your security software is turned on, a warning message may appear that Canon software is attempting to access the network. If such a warning message appears, set the security software to always allow access.
     
  • Log on as the administrator (or a member of the Administrators group).
     
  • Do not switch users during the installation process.
     
  • Internet connection may be required during the installation. Connection fees may apply. Consult the internet service provider.
     
  • It may be necessary to restart your computer during the installation process. Follow the on-screen instructions and do not remove the Setup CD-ROM during restart. The installation resumes once your computer has restarted.
CAUTION
  • Keep the USB cable connected.
 

 

Step 1.
Turn on the computer, then insert the Setup CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
The setup program starts automatically.
REFERENCE
  • If the program does not start automatically, double-click the CD-ROM icon in Computer or My Computer, then doubleclick MSETUP4.EXE.
 

 

Step 2. Windows 7/Windows Vista
Windows XP -> 3
Click Run Msetup4.exe on the AutoPlay screen, then click Yes or Continue on the User Account Control dialog box.
If the User Account Control dialog box reappears in following steps, click Yes or Continue.
 

 

Step 3.
Click [ Custom Install ].
 

 

Step 4.
Select MP Driver. Then click Next.
 

 

Step 5.
Select Use the printer with wireless LAN connection, then click Next.
Follow any on-screen instructions to proceed with the software installation.
 

 

Step 6.
When the Printer Detection screen appears, click Next.
 

 

Step 7.
When the Detected Printers List dialog box appears, select "Canon MX xxx series", then click Next.
When the Setup Completion dialog box appears, click Complete.
REFERENCE
XXX: xxx refers to the model name you are using.
 

 

IMPORTANT
  • When this printer has not been detected, the Check Printer Settings dialog box is displayed. In such a case, refer to the printed manual: Network Setup Troubleshooting.
 

 

Step 8.
Click Next.
Follow any on-screen instructions to proceed with the software installation.
 

 

- Important Information for the Installation
 

 

  • If the Extended Survey Program screen appears
If you can agree to Extended Survey Program, click Agree.
If you click Do not agree, the Extended Survey Program will not be installed. (This has no effect on the machine's functionality.)
 

 

Step 9.
Click Exit to complete the installation.
 

 

Step 10.
Solution Menu EX starts.
Remove the Setup CD-ROM and keep it in a safe place.
 

 

Step 11.
Unplug the USB cable.

- Macintosh

 

When you are using a Macintosh computer, see the following procedures:
 
To perform the software installation, prepare the Setup CD-ROM prepackaged with the printer.
IMPORTANT
  • Quit all running applications before installation.

Double-click the Setup icon of the CD-ROM folder to proceed to the following screen. Enter your administrator name and password, then click OK.

If the CD-ROM folder does not open automatically, double-click the CD-ROM icon on the desktop.
If you do not know your administrator name or password, click the help button, then follow the on-screen instructions.
 

 

Step 3.
Click [ Custom Install ].
 

 

Step 4.
Select [ MP Driver ] and [ Canon IJ Network Tool ] Then, click [ Install ].
 

 

Step 5.
Select Use the printer with wireless LAN connection, then click Next.
Follow any on-screen instructions to proceed with the software installation.
 

 

Step 6.
When the Printer Detection screen appears, click Next.
 

 

Step 7.
On the Canon IJ Network Tool screen, select "MX xxx series in Printers, then click Next.
REFERENCE
XXX: xxx refers to the model name you are using.
 

 

IMPORTANT
  • When this printer has not been detected, the Check Printer Settings dialog box is displayed. In such a case, refer to the printed manual: Network Setup Troubleshooting.
 

 

- Registration
REFERENCE
  • The alphanumeric characters after Canon MX880 series is the machine's Bonjour service name or MAC address.
  • If the machine is not detected, make sure of the following.
- The machine is turned on.
- The firewall function of any security software is turned off.
- The computer is connected to the access point.
 

 

Step 8.
When the Register Printer and Scanner screen appears, click Register Printer.

Select Canon IJ Network in the pop-up menu, select Canon MX xxx series in the list of printers, then click Add.

Make sure that Canon MX xxx series is added to the list of printers.

When the Register Printer and Scanner screen appears, click Register Scanner.
 

 

Step 11.
Select Canon MX xxx series on the Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector EX screen, then click OK.
 

 

Step 12.
Click Next on the Register Printer and Scanner screen.
 

 

Step 13.
Click Next.
Follow any on-screen instructions to proceed with the software installation.
 

 

- Important Information for the Installation
 

 

  • If the Extended Survey Program screen appears
If you can agree to Extended Survey Program, click Agree.

Step 14.
Click Exit to complete the installation.
It is necessary to restart the computer before scanning using the Operation Panel on the machine for the first time.
 

 

Step 15.
Solution Menu EX starts when clicking OK in the Canon Solution Menu EX dialog.
Remove the Setup CD-ROM and keep it in a safe place.
 

 

Step 16.
Unplug the USB cable.

4. Perform the test printing.

After confirming the wireless setup, perform the test printing.
Print any document or photo you want to print.
If you can perform printing without a problem, the wireless setup is completed.
