Prep for Live View

1. Switch <ON> the camera.
   
2. To shoot still photos, set the Live View switch to <>. To shoot movies, select <>.
    
3. When movie shooting is selected, the image appears on the LCD monitor.
4. When preparing to take photos, press the [Menu] button.
5. Go to the [] tab, and then select [Enable] in the [Live View shoot.] option.
   
6. When taking photos, press the <> button. The Live View image appears on the LCD monitor.
   ​

• Auto focus <AF> is good for everyday shooting or subjects that move.
• Use AF (Face+Tracking)  is useful when you want to focus on a face that may shift around in the image.
• Use AF (FlexiZone - Multi) to focus on up to nine zones or 31 auto focus points within the frame.
• Use AF (FlexiZone - Single) to focus on a single auto focus point.
• Use manual focus when shooting a static scene where you need ultimate control over the point of focus.

Use auto focus

1. Set the lens focus mode switch to <AF>.
   
2. Make sure that the camera is ready to take shots, and then press the <MENU> button.
   
3. Press the <> button and select the [  ] tab.
    
4. Turn the <> dial to select the [  ] tab for still images, or the [  ] tab for movies.
     
5. Turn the <> dial to select the [AF method], and then press <>.
     
6. Turn the <> dial to select an AF mode, and then press <>.
    
7. Press the <MENU> button, and then close the menu window. An image will appear on the LCD monitor.
   
8. While the image is displayed on the LCD monitor, press the <> button to enable you to set the AF method on the Quick Control Screen.

Use AF (Face+Tracking) to focus

1. In [  +Tracking] AF The camera detects and focuses human faces. If a face moves, the AF point <> also moves to track the face.
    
2. Focus on the face of the subject.
   • When a face is detected, the [  ] frame appears over the face to be focused.
   • If multiple faces are detected, [  ] is displayed. Use <> to move the [  ] frame over the face you want to focus on.
   • If no faces are detected, the camera switches to FlexiZone - Multi for automatic selection
   
3. Press the shutter button halfway to focus. When focus is achieved, the AF point turns green and the camera beeps. The AF point turns orange if the camera cannot focus.
   
4. Press the <> button to return to the normal view.
5. Press the shutter button completely to take a photo or press the <> to shoot a movie.

Use AF (FlexiZone - Multi) to focus

1. Select the zone for the AF point.
   • Pressing <> or the <> button toggles between automatic selection and zone selection. In <> mode, automatic selection is set automatically.
   • Use <> to select the zone. To return to the center zone, press <> or <> again.
2. Aim the AF point over the subject and press the shutter button halfway. When focus is achieved, the AF point turns green and the camera beeps. The AF point turns orange if the camera cannot focus.
3. Press the <> button to return to the normal view.
4. Press the shutter button completely to take a photo or press the <> to shoot a movie.

Note: Depending on the [ : Aspect ratio], the number of AF points varies. At [3:2], there are 31 AF points. At [4:3] and [1:1], there are 25 AF points. And at [16:9], 21 AF points. Also, at [16:9], there are three zones. For movie shooting, there are 21 AF points (or 25 AF points if [640x480] is set) and three zones (or nine zones if [640x480] is set).

Use AF (FlexiZone - Single) to focus

In [FlexiZone - Single AF], the camera focuses with a single AF point. This is effective when you want to focus on a particular subject.

1. The AF point <> () appears. During movie shooting, if [Movie Servo AF] is set to [Enable], the AF point is displayed in a larger size.
2. Move the AF point. Use the <> to move the AF point to where you want to focus. (It cannot be moved to the edge of the screen. Press <> or <> to return the AF point to the center. 
3. Aim the AF point over the subject, then press the shutter button halfway and hold it. When focus is achieved, the AF point turns green and the camera beeps. The AF point turns orange if the camera cannot focus.
   
4. Press the <> button to return to the normal view.
5. Press the shutter button completely to take a photo or press the <> to shoot a movie.

Use manual focus

You can magnify the image and focus precisely with manual focus. This is useful with a stationary subject.

1. Set the lens focus mode switch to <MF>.
   
2. Turn the lens focusing ring to focus.
3. Press <> to display the magnifying frame ().
   
4. Use <> to move the magnifying frame to where you want to focus. Pressing <> returns the magnifying frame to the center of the screen.
   
5. Press the <> button to magnify the area within the frame. You can press the <> button, to cycle through 1x, 5x, 10x, Normal view. You can use <> to scroll around in magnified image. In the image,  is AE lock, shows the magnified area position,  is magnification.
   
6. While looking at the magnified image, turn the focus ring to fine-tune the focus
7. Press the <> button to return to the normal view.
8. Press the shutter button completely to take a photo or press the <> to shoot a movie..

Good to know

• Even if a low ISO speed is set, noise may be noticeable in the displayed Live View image under low light. However, when you shoot, the image recorded will have minimal noise. (The image quality of the Live View image is different from that of the recorded image.)
• If there is a very bright light source in the image, the bright area may appear black on the LCD monitor. However, the actual captured image will correctly show the bright area.
• During Live View shooting, some Custom Functions do not work. 

Lens and flash

• The focus preset function is possible for Live View shooting only when using a (super) telephoto lens equipped with the focus preset mode, available since the second half of 2011.
• FE lock does not work if the built-in flash is used. FE lock and modeling flash do not work if an external Speedlite is used.

Image quality

• When you shoot at high ISO speeds, noise (such as dots of light and banding) may become noticeable.
• Shooting in high temperatures may cause noise and irregular colors in the image.
• If Live View shooting is used continuously for a prolonged period, the cameras temperature may rise, and image quality may deteriorate. Always exit Live View shooting when you are not shooting.
• If you shoot a long exposure while the cameras temperature is high, image quality may deteriorate. Exit Live View shooting and wait a few minutes before shooting again.
