Learn how to use the Canon IJ Scan Utility to scan multiple originals into a single PDF file.

  1. Load a document on the platen glass scanning surface or into the automatic document feeder (ADF).  Legal-sized documents must be loaded in the ADF.
  2. Launch the IJ Scan Utility from the appropriate location on your computer.
  • Mac: From the Finder’s Go menu, select Applications, then open the Canon Utilities folder > IJ Scan Utility folder > IJ Scan Utility.
  • Windows 10: From the Start menu, select All Apps > Canon Utilities > IJ Scan Utility. If you do not see this, type IJ Scan Utility in the search bar.
  • Windows 8: Select IJ Scan Utility on the Start screen. (If IJ Scan Utility is not displayed on the Start screen, select the Search charm, then search for IJ Scan Utility.)
  • Windows 7 / Windows Vista / Windows XP: From the Start menu, select All Programs > Canon Utilities > IJ Scan Utility > IJ Scan Utility to start IJ Scan Utility.
  1. Select Settings...

NOTE: If you have the Data Format set to PDF and not PDF (Multiple Pages), each page will be saved as its own PDF file, rather than being combined into a single file.
  3. If your model has an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) and you wish to use this for scanning, select Document (ADF Simplex), Document (ADF Manual Duplex), or ADF (Auto Duplex).  Note that the ADF options available may be different depending on the model that you are using.

  4. Select Document to start scanning.

  5. After the original document has been scanned, you will see the Scan Complete dialog box. If you have more pages to scan, place the next original on the platen glass and select Scan.

Note:  The Scan Complete screen also appears after the last page is scanned from the document feeder.  If there are more pages to scan, place them in the feeder and select Scan
  1. Repeat step 6 until the last page has been scanned, then select Exit.
  2. Your multiple-page PDF document will be saved to the location specified in Save Settings.
The default folder on a Mac is Documents. In Windows the default folder is either My Documents or Documents.
