Using the Solutions Disk Troubleshooting tools for installation errors.

Solution

Troubleshooting the Canon Solution Disk Installation

In some cases installing the software individually by using the [Custom] installation feature and selecting the software to install may help in some cases where installation is failing. This can also be achieved by exploring the supplied CD-ROM and choosing the software installation for each piece of software.

Troubleshooting PhotoStitch Installation

While installing the software from the Solution Disk, the following dialog boxes may be displayed and the installation may be canceled.

If this problem occurs, you may be able to resolve the problem by using the following workaround.

Note: For Windows 2000*, XP, and Vista users, have a user with administrator privileges perform the following workarounds.

* For those models that are supported in Windows 2000 please check the System Requirements for your models to determined Operating System compatibility.

These procedures may also correct other installation errors you may encounter. If these procedures do not solve your issue please feel free to contact us by calling our support center for further assistance. Depending on the error you are receiving may also wish to contact your computer manufacturer to troubleshoot your operating system.

1. To find the troubleshoot folder on your Solutions Disk go to "My Computer" and right-click the Canon CD ROM (Solutions Disk) and choose Explore.

2. Next click into the Troubleshoot folder and you are ready to begin the Troubleshooting procedures outlined below.

The following is a list of the troubleshooting tools available:

For the [PhotoStitch] software, if there is difficulty installing this application there is a folder in the above folder list called [PSTCLEAN]. Open the folder and there is a [PSTCLEAN.EXE] click on this option and the registry cleaner will run. Next restart the computer and try to re-run the [PhotoStitch] installation.

Re-install the Windows Installer Service

This error may occur because the Windows Installer Service installation was not performed properly. The instructions for re-installing the Windows Installer Service are explained here.

For Windows XP users, this workaround is unnecessary. Try "Re-install ISScript."

  1. For Windows 98/Me users, run INSTMSIA.EXE in the \TROUBLESHOOT folder on the Solution Disk.
For Windows 2000 users, run INSTMSIW.EXE in the \TROUBLESHOOT folder on the Solution Disk.
  2. If the following dialog box is displayed, Windows Installer Service is installed properly, and this workaround is unnecessary. Try "Re-install ISScript."

  3. If the Confirmation dialog box is displayed, continue the installation following the instructions. When asked to restart, restart.
  4. When the Windows Installer Service installation is complete, run the SETUP.EXE in the root folder of the Solution Disk.

If the same error occurs, try "Re-install ISScript."

Re-install ISScript

If "Re-Install Windows Installer Service" is not effective, try the following workaround.

This error may occur because the InstallScript Runtime (ISScript) installation was not performed properly. The instructions for re-installing the ISScript are explained here.

  1. Run ISSCRIPT8.MSI in the \TROUBLESHOOT folder on the Solution Disk.
  2. The wizard screen like the one shown below will be launched, and you continue the installation.

  3. When the wizard is finished, restart Windows to complete the ISScript installation.
  4. After you restart Windows, run SETUP.EXE in the root folder of the Solution Disk.

If the same error occurs, try "Modify access privileges for the registry."

Modify the access privileges for the registry

If " Re-Install ISScript" is not effective, try the following workaround.

This error may occur because some of the access privileges set for the registry are invalid. The instructions for modifying the registry's access rights are provided here.

For Windows 98/ME users, this workaround is unnecessary. Try " Initialize the Windows Installer Service."

  1. Run REGUPD_IS.EXE in the \TROUBLESHOOT folder on the Solution Disk. When the following dialog box is displayed, the access privileges for the registry have been modified.

  2. After closing the dialog box, restart Windows for the modifications to the registry access privileges to take effect.
  3. After you restart Windows, run SETUP.EXE in the root folder of the Solution Disk.

If the same error occurs, try "Initialize the Windows Installer Service."

Initialize the Windows Installer Service

If "Modify the access privileges for the registry" is not effective, try the following workaround.

This error may occur because the initialization of Windows Installer Service was not performed properly. The instructions for initializing the Windows Installer Service are explained here.

  1. Run REGSRV.BAT in the \TROUBLESHOOT folder on the Solution Disk.
On Windows 98/Me, the MS-DOS prompt opens and the command is automatically executed.
On Windows 2000/XP, the command prompt opens and the command is automatically executed.
  2. After executing the command, if the MS-DOS Prompt/Command Prompt are still open, close the window.
  3. When the following step is completed, restart Windows for the initialization of the Windows Installer Service to take effect.
  4. After you restart Windows, run SETUP.EXE in the root folder of the Solution Disk.
