Description

Although VOIP is not supported, by adjusting the VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) settings, you may be able to successfully send faxes.

Solution

VoIP (Voice over IP - that is, voice delivered using the Internet Protocol) is a term used in IP telephony for a set of facilities for managing the delivery of voice information using the Internet Protocol (IP). In general, this means sending voice or fax information in digital form in discrete packets rather than in the traditional circuit-committed protocols of the public switched telephone network (PSTN). Canon's fax machines were developed against the PSTN standard.

Although Canon does not support our machines over VoIP, it may be possible to successfully send faxes using this method of transmission. Most VoIP providers have made provisions to support faxing. Unfortunately, they vary from provider to provider. For example:

If you are using Vonage, you will need to use "*99" prior to making a fax call. This will enhance the fax quality and prevent issues with the fax failing to go thru.

If you are using AT&T CallVantage, the service comes with the Fax and Modem support automatically turned off. You need to turn Fax and Modem Support on through the Account Management & Settings page (http://www.usa.att.com/callvantage/faqs/using_service.jsp#fax_support).

If you are not using one of these two companies, the best thing to do would be to contact your VoIP provider for specific instructions and settings that will allow faxing through their service.
