Selecting a Still Image Shooting Mode

Special Scene Mode

You can take an optimal picture simply by selecting the appropriate shooting mode.

Turn the Mode Select dial to select (Auto), P (Program), Av (Aperture priority), Tv (Shutter Priority), M (Manual), C1 (Custom 1), C2 (Custom 2), SCN (Scene), (Stitch Assist) or (Movie) modes. Depending on the shooting mode selected will determine the options available for the camera's function.

Auto

Leaves almost all of the settings choices up to the camera.

SCN

Special Scene

You can shoot the most appropriate settings for the specific scene. These modes are indicated with an asterisk (*) below.

Portrait*

 Blurs the background and makes the person stand out.

Landscape*

 Optimized for shooting landscape scenes which contain near and far subjects.

Night Scene*

 Allows you to capture human subjects against the backdrop of an evening sky or night scene. The flash is directed at the person and the shutter speed is slow, so the person and the background can be beautifully shot.

Sports*

 Shoots continuous images with autofocus. Well suited for shooting moving subjects.

Night Snapshot*

Use this to take snapshots of people against twilight or night backgrounds to reduce the effects of camera shake even without using a tripod.

Kids&Pets*

Allows you to capture subjects that move around, such as children and pets, without missing photo opportunities.

Indoor*

Prevents camera shake and maintains the subject's true color when shooting under florescent or tungsten lightning. The exposure is regulated so as to avoid the use of flash as much as possible.

Foliage*

 Shoots trees and leaves - such as new growth, autumn leaves or blossoms - in vivid colors.

Snow*

 Shoots without a blue tinge and without making people appear dark against a snowy background.

Beach*

 Shoots without making people appear dark near water or sand where reflected sunlight is strong.

Fireworks*

 Captures fireworks in the sky sharply and at optimal exposure.

Aquarium*

 Selects the optimal ISO speed, white balance and color balance to capture fish and other items in an indoor aquarium.

Underwater*

Appropriate for shooting images with the All Weather Case WP-DC11 (sold separately). This mode uses an optimal white balance setting to reduce bluish tones and record images with natural hues.

ISO 3200*

 Shoots with the ISO speed set to 3200. Use it when high shutter speeds are required. (Twice as sensitive as ISO 1600.) Avoids blurring of the subject and the effects of camera shake.

Color Accent*

 Use this option to have only the color specified in the LCD monitor remain and to transform all others to black and white.

Color Swap*

 Use this option to transform a color specified in the LCD monitor into another.

Stitch Assist

 Allows you to shoot over-lapping images that can late be merged (stitched) to create one panoramic image on a computer using software.

Movie

 Shoots a movie when you press the shutter button. Apart from [ Standard] mode, you can also select from [ High Resolution] which is suitable for viewing on computer monitors at large sizes, [ Compact] which is convenient for email attachments, [ Color Accent] which has only the color specified in the LCD monitor remain and transforms all others to black and white, and [ Color Swap] which transforms a color specified in the LCD monitor into another color.

P

Program

 Program mode allows you to change items such as exposure compensation, white blanace, metering patterns etc. Part of the Creative Mode functions of the camera.

Av

Aperture Priority

 Aperture Priority allows you to select the aperture while the camera chooses the appropriate shutter speed to achieve proper exposure.

Tv

Shutter Priority

 Shutter Priority allows you to select the shutter speed while the camera chooses the appropriate aperture value to achieve proper exposure.

M

Manual

 Manual mode allows you to choose shutter and aperture values and provides a light meter reading to show proper exposure.

C1,C2

Custom 1 / 2.

 Custom 1 and 2 allow you to customize a shooting mode to suit your specific needs and allows you to return to that mode since the camera stores your settings in memory.

* Available as Special Scene Modes when using the SCN option selectable on the Mode Select dial.

Auto Mode:

  1. When the camera is powered on and the Mode Select dial is on the (Auto Mode) it is ready to begin shooting.

Special Scene Modes:

  1. Power the camera on in the SCN mode.
  2. Use the Main Control Dial to select the desired Special Scene mode.

    - The available Special Scene modes will display at the top right corner of the LCD monitor. Once you select the mode you wish to use, press the <FUNC./SET> button or pause on the selection and the camera will automatically select the option you stopped at.
  • The slow shutter speed in the (Fireworks) mode makes it necessary to use a tripod to avoid camera shake.
  • In , , ,, , and , modes, the ISO speed may increase and cause noise in the image.
  • In mode , shoot with the subject 1 - 4 m (39 in. - 3.3 ft.) (telephoto range zoom settings)/1 m (39 in.) - infinity (non-telephoto range zoom settings) from the end of the lens.
  • Results may vary depending on the subject.
  • In mode, you are recommended to use the LCD monitor to shoot.
  • To shoot underwater, install the camera in Waterproof WP-DC21 (sold separately).
  • We also recommend the WP-DC21 for at shooting ski resorts or beaches to prevent moisture or sand damage.
